It’s official! David Warner has been announced as the interim captain for Delhi Capitals in the upcoming 2023 IPL. This decision comes as a result of Rishabh Pant’s recovery from a horrific car accident, which has left him unable to play for the foreseeable future.
It’s not the first time that Warner has taken on the role of captain for Delhi Capitals, having led the team for a couple of matches during his first stint with the franchise between 2009 and 2013. However, he’s since gone on to achieve great things as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, leading them to victory in the 2016 IPL.
Warner’s Successes in the IPL
Warner’s success as a captain is evident from his impressive track record, which puts him in joint-fifth place as one of the most successful IPL captains.
Record-wise, in the 69 matches that Warner led, his teams won 35, lost 32, and tied two matches. This incredible achievement is a testament to his leadership skills and ability to inspire his team to greatness.
As a batsman, Warner is no slouch either. With 2840 runs at an average of 47.33 and a strike rate of 142.28, he’s proven to be a force to be reckoned with on the field. And with one century and 26 fifties under his belt, there’s no denying he’s a valuable asset to any team he plays for.
Although Warner’s form was weak during the first half of the 2021 IPL, resulting in him being benched and eventually replaced as captain by Kane Williamson, he bounced back spectacularly during his time with Delhi Capitals.
He was the team’s leading run-scorer in the last IPL, racking up an impressive 432 runs at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 150.52, including five half-centuries.
Of course, Warner’s white-ball career isn’t the only thing on his mind at the moment. He’s also looking ahead to the ODI World Cup, which will be played in India in October-November. With the IPL experience under his belt, he’ll be in a great position to help Australia prepare for the tournament and give his team the best chance of success.
Delhi Capitals and the IPL
