Bangladesh secured a resounding 2-0 series victory against Ireland in their final one-day international in Sylhet, marking their first-ever 10-wicket win. Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal comfortably chased Ireland’s dismal 101-run total in less than 14 overs, with Liton remaining unbeaten on 50 and Tamim on 41.
The Irish bowling attack struggled, serving up 10 wides and a leg bye. Pacer Hasan Mahmud claimed his maiden five-wicket ODI haul, conceding just 32 runs after Ireland elected to bat first.
Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain also impressed, taking three and two wickets respectively, while Ireland recorded their lowest one-day score against Bangladesh.
Response to the ODI Results
Bangladesh’s Skipper Tamim Iqbal was thrilled with his team’s performance in the series. “We can call it the perfect series,” Tamim said to the reporters. “I am very satisfied as a captain that we have ticked almost every box.”
Tamim also expressed his faith in the batting ability of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who missed the first two matches of the series after being hit on the eye by a football. “We have faith in Miraz’s batting ability. He showed it. If we can trust him and if he can deliver, it becomes easier to operate with six bowlers,” he added.
He emphasized the importance of believing in their players and maintaining a strong unit to become the best in the world. The team’s strong performance on the field sent a clear message of authority to their opponents.
Ireland’s captain, Andy Balbirnie, expressed his disappointment in the team’s performance. “We did expect spin to play a big part, but our defence with the bat wasn’t good enough. We did not adapt well enough,” he said.
What Happened in the Match and Bangladesh’s ODI Journey
During the match, Bangladesh chased down the target in just 14 overs, with Liton Das remaining unbeaten on a well-compiled half-century. Tamim Iqbal supported him ably, scoring 41 not out from the other end.
Ireland’s bowlers were no match for the Bangladeshi openers, who coasted to the target with ease.
Curtis Campher top-scored for Ireland with 36 runs, while Lorcan Tucker managed 28 after being dropped at zero by Liton. However, Ireland’s batting performance was never enough to challenge the dominant Bangladesh side, who have been in a ruthless form in the series.
Results of the ODI Victory
The series was marked by Bangladesh’s record-breaking performances, with Saturday’s opener marking their biggest ODI victory margin. Then on Monday, they recorded their highest ODI total with 349-6, with Mushfiqur Rahim scoring the fastest ODI century by a Bangladeshi batsman off just 60 balls.
The team’s dominance was evident throughout the series, culminating in their first-ever 10-wicket win.
Despite the drubbing, Ireland will play three Twenty20 internationals and a Test during their visit, providing them with an opportunity to regroup and come back stronger.
As for Bangladesh, their impressive performances signal a bright future for the team, with their solid fast-bowling department and dominant performances on the field setting them on a trajectory towards becoming the best in the world.
