France kicked off their defence of the World Cup with a thumping 4-1 win over Australia. Goals from Olivier Giroud who scored two and a goal each from Adrien Rabiot and Kylian Mbappe secured their win.
The game kicked off with an unfortunate incident as defender Lucas Hernandez suffered a knee injury and had to be replaced by his brother Theo Hernandez. Within nine minutes of the game, France fell behind to a Craig Goodwin goal and supporters feared the worse.
France however, bounced back in the 27th minute when Hernandez took possession of the ball and whipped an amazing cross met by Adrien Rabiot’s thumping header. 5 minutes later, Giroud scored and France were in cruise control for the rest of the match.
Having scored twice in the match, Giroud also matched Thierry Henry’s national record of 51 goals. A goal in the next 2 games, will make Giroud the all time international goal scorer for France. France play Denmark next and know that a win will all but secure them a spot in the Round of 16.
