English Premier League: Matchday 1 Preview
The 2023 / 2024 Premier League season kicks off this weekend with newly promoted Burnley hosting champions Manchester City at Turf Moor. Former Man City captain and Burnley manager, Vincent Kompany faces a tough opening fixture against a side that is looking to make history by becoming the first team to win the Premier League 4 times in a row.
Erling Haaland will be crucial to City’s chances as his record-breaking 36 goals last season help secure 24 points for City. He will be looking to kick start the season with the same form he showed last season and Burnley’s defence will have to be at their best to stop the Norwegian.
Saturday’s fixtures kick off with Arsenal playing host to Nottingham Forest. The Gunners, fresh from their Community Shield victory last weekend will be looking for a quick-fire start to the season with new signings, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz expected to feature.
Forest struggled away from home last season, winning just one game out of the 19 away games and all signs point to an expected Arsenal win. The same fixture last season saw Arsenal winning comfortably 5-0 with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Reiss Nelson grabbing the goals.

Newcastle and Aston go head-to-head on Saturday evening with both sides looking to build on their success from last season. The Magpies broke into the top 4 and will play in the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. The signings for Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes have added more depth to their squad and will be looking to cement their place in the top 4.
Unai Emery transformed Villa from a bottom half team to finish 7th in the league last season, just narrowly missing out on a European spot. Both sides played out to a 3-3 draw in the Summer Series last month and fans will be expecting goals from this fixture.
Sunday’s headline fixture sees Chelsea hosting Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Both teams will be looking for a win after a disappointing 2022 / 2023 season. Chelsea’s new signing, Christopher Nkunku will miss the game as he picked up an injury in their friendly versus Borussia Dortmund. However, 22-year-old Nicolas Jackson should feature up front and lead the line against the Reds.
Liverpool will be looking to get back into the top 4 and have spent close to 100 million pounds on Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboslai. Mo Salah will be looking to continue his streak of scoring on the opening to 7 seasons. Last season’s fixture ended goalless and a draw might the likely outcome for this game.
Matchday 1 ends with Manchester United hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night. The Red Devils have invested heavily in the summer with the signings of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund and will be looking for a win to kick start their campaign.
Wolves on the other hand look to be in turmoil with former manager, Julen Lopetegui leaving the club one week prior to the start of the Premier League. Former Bournemouth manager, Gary O’Neil has been appointed to replace Lopetegui but questions remain if he is able to prepare the team in time for their opening game.
Matchday 1 is shaping up as an indicator to which teams will be challenging for the title and which teams will be fighting relegation.
