Fans are trolling the Australian team following Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal from Ashes 2023. Despite the dismissal, the Australian team won the second Test match against England.
What happened in Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal?
During the 52nd over, England played on 193/6 with skipper Ben Stokes playing some remarkable innings. While Cameron Green was bowling to Jonny Bairstow, he left the ball and it went to Australian wicket-keeper Alex Carey. Jonny Bairstow looked at his feet and then moved ahead to change strike after assuming the over was complete.
In that moment, Bairstow briefly looked at his feet inside the crease and proceeded to change ends, assuming the over had ended. Unexpectedly, Alex Carey decided to stump Bairstow, even though it was clear that Bairstow was heading towards the other end of the pitch. Bairstow was bewildered by the Australian players’ celebration as the decision went to the third umpire, who ruled him out.
Due to Bairstow’s wicket being a turning point in the game, the anger intensified and fans are divided on social media, with some calling it against the spirit of the game and some sharing videos of England playing against the ethical code.

Aussies thinking that the #JonnyBairstow incident is about the score in #TheAshes r just embarrassing themselves. I’ve been praising the Aussie teams play in this series so far. I now think this ‘No 1 Team’ is tainted by ‘Spirit of the Game’ infractions, my respect has nosedived!…

What do the rules say?
According to the MCC’s dead ball law 20.1.1.1, the ball is considered dead once it is settled in the hands of the wicket-keeper or bowler. The Australian team could argue that the ball never fully settled in Carey’s hands as he immediately threw it towards the stumps. Law 20.1.2 states that the ball is deemed dead when the bowler’s end umpire perceives that the fielding side and both batsmen no longer consider it in play.
My thoughts around it is, when is it justified that umpires have called ‘over’? Does the square-leg umpire making some movement justify that? Jonny Bairstow was in his crease and then came out to have a chat in the middle. I’m not disputing if it was out, it was. If the shoe was on the other foot, I would’ve had to think about the whole spirit of the game. But it has happened, it was out. We have to move on… Do I want to win in that manner? No,
Ben Stokes
England skipper
I think Carey saw it happen a few balls previously, three or four balls previously, and there’s no pause, catch it, straightaway and throw at the stumps. I thought it was fair play. That’s how the rule is. Some people might disagree. That’s how I saw it
Pat Cummins
Australian skipper
Was Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal within the spirit of the game and fair? As the Ashes series progresses, it remains to be seen how this incident will influence the players’ behavior on and off the field, as well as the discussions surrounding the integrity and sportsmanship of the game. Following this, the teams must regroup and head North to Leeds, for the third test at Headingly on the 6th of July.
