Litton Das joins Bangladesh team ahead of Super Fours
Bangladesh welcome Litton Das back to the team after he was originally removed due to illness. The wicketkeeper batter was down with a viral fever that prevented him from joining the Bangladesh squad for their Group Stage matches. However, Das has received a clearance certificate from the medical team and has now flown into Lahore to prepare for the Super Fours.
The other reason for his inclusion this late in the tournament is due to fresh injury concerns to the squad. Najmul Hossain Shanto who scored a century versus Afghanistan suffered from finger cramps and retired hurt. In the tournament opener against Sri Lanka, bowler Mustafizur Rahman picked up an injury and did not play in their second match.
Both players are doubtful for the Super Fours which kicks off on September 6th. Bangladesh chief selector, Minhajul Abedin said “The squad has a few injury concerns and the team management felt the need for an additional player going into the Super Fours”.
Litton Das last appeared for the Tigers in their T20 International win over Afghanistan on 16th July. He was the opening batsmen alongside Afif Hosain. He scored 35 runs out of 36 balls which included hitting six 4’s. His presence was sorely missed in their Asia Cup opening match against Sri Lanka.
Litton’s ODI debut for Bangladesh was against India in 2015 where the Tigers famously pulled off a 79-run victory against the fancied Indian team. Although Das only scored 8 runs from 13 balls in his debut, it was clearly a start of a promising career. Litton’s current stats in the ODI format has seen him play 72 ODIs garnering a total of 2,213 runs with a batting average of 34.04.
With Bangladesh sealing qualification to the Super Fours with a convincing 89-run victory over Afghanistan on Sunday, it would be interesting to see how Bangladesh sort their batting order with Das returning.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz replaced Das at the top of the order and scored a memorable century versus Afghanistan. Mehidy and Mohammad Naim opened the batting with Shanto at No.3. If Das is restored to the top of the order, this might see a reshuffle in the batting order with Mehidy moving down the order to where he usually bats. This will also be dependent on if Shanto has recovered from his injury.
Bangladesh needs to be at their batting best if they are to get a result especially against bowlers from both Pakistan and India. Bangladesh will play Pakistan on September 6th and India on September 15th. Their 3rd fixture will take place on September 9th against either Sri Lanka or Afghanistan whom have yet to play their last group match. All matches will take place in Colombo.
The top 2 teams in the Super Four stage will play in the finals on September 17th. The winners will take the confidence on winning this tournament into the ODI World Cup with high hopes of successful campaign.
