Root Reclaims No. 1 Batter in ICC Test Rankings
Joe Root, the formidable England batter, has once again risen to claim the coveted top position in the Madras Rubber Factory Tyres International Cricket Council Men’s Test Player Rankings. Root’s exceptional performances in the first Test match against Australia in Birmingham propelled him four places higher in the rankings. Despite his individual brilliance, Australia managed to clinch a thrilling victory by two wickets in the nail-biting encounter.
This isn’t the first time that Root has reached the pinnacle of the rankings. He initially achieved the No. 1 position in August 2015 and last held the top spot in December of the previous year. His consistent performances and unwavering determination have once again catapulted him to the summit of the Test rankings, with a current rating of 887 points.
Root’s resurgence sees him surpass New Zealand’s Kane Williamson by four rating points, securing the second spot. Meanwhile, Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne trails closely behind in third place, with a 10-point gap separating him from the English captain.
The first Test match also witnessed other notable improvements in the rankings. Usman Khawaja, who was awarded the Player of the Match, showcased his batting prowess with scores of 141 and 65, which enabled him to climb two places to the seventh position. Similarly, Harry Brook from England and Alex Carey from Australia demonstrated their skills and were rewarded with significant jumps in the rankings. Brook ascended five spots to secure the 13th position, while Carey advanced seven places, securing the 29th spot in the batting rankings.
The impact of the Birmingham Test was not limited to the batting department, as England’s fast bowlers also made strides in the rankings. Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad gained one position each after impressing with their performances, taking five and six wickets respectively in the match. Robinson now stands in fifth place, while Broad finds himself in ninth place. The experienced James Anderson, a veteran of the English side, maintains his second position, trailing behind Ravichandran Ashwin, who leads the bowlers’ list.
In the latest rankings update, which includes performances from the one-off Test match between Bangladesh and Afghanistan in Mirpur, several players saw significant improvements. Mominul Haque rose 17 slots to claim the 53rd position after his remarkable innings of 121 in the second innings. His teammate Nazmul Hossain Shanto surged 25 places to secure the 54th position after scoring centuries in both innings of the match.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz, with his exceptional performance of two wickets for 15 runs in just nine overs, climbed two places to 25th in the bowlers’ list. His fellow bowlers, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam, also made notable progress, ascending three and 12 places respectively, securing the 62nd and 71st positions in the rankings.
In the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings, Sri Lankan batsmen capitalized on their impressive performances in the ongoing Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. Kariyawasa Asalanka rose three places to claim the 40th position, while Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka also enjoyed improvements, rising two and five slots respectively. Oman’s batters, Aquib Ilyas Sulehri, Zeeshan Maqsood, and Kashyap Prajapati, displayed their skills and garnered significant gains in the rankings.
Maqsood, in particular, made remarkable progress, rising six places in the batting rankings to reach the 59th spot. He also achieved a career-best No. 3 position in the all-rounders’ list after climbing two spots. Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams and captain Craig Ervine also witnessed improvements, with Williams ascending five places to secure the 53rd spot and Ervine leaping 12 positions to attain the 79th position.
Furthermore, Saurabh Netravalkar from the USA achieved a career-best 18th position in the bowlers’ rankings, making history as the first USA player to enter the top 20 in either the batting or bowling lists of the ODI rankings. Aayan Afzal Khan from the UAE and Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava also experienced positive shifts in their rankings, climbing 10, four, and five places, respectively.
