Tigers’ Backup Training Aligned with Needs
A backup is more than just a spare option. Imagine a group of nine cricket players training at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. They’re being prepared as substitutes for the Tigers’ team in the upcoming World Cup in case the main players can’t play. This training is closely aligned with what the main team needs, based on instructions from their head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha.
People have been talking a lot about why Mahmudullah Riyad isn’t in the Asia Cup squad. But the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) wants to make sure that if they ever need experienced players like Riyad or someone who can clear the field like Soumya Sarkar, they have players ready who match the team’s requirements.
Tamim Iqbal is part of this group, but he needs to finish recovering from his injury before he can start the intense training that the other nine players are doing. A source from BCB said that if Tamim’s recovery goes well and he can handle the training, he’ll be back to play in the series against New Zealand at home.
The practice sessions for these backup players are designed to be just like the real national team’s practice. This way, if they’re chosen to play, they can easily fit in and perform well. The coach in charge of their training, Sohel Islam, told reporters that the goal is to match the intensity and amount of practice with what the national team does. This training camp will go on until September 3 at first, but it might continue until the ICC World Cup. The training is specifically tailored to meet the needs of the national team.

The focus of these training sessions is on developing skills and getting ready for specific roles in the team. Sohel explained that they’re preparing in two main ways. First, they’re working on technical skills so that the backup players can handle specific challenges in case they need to step in. Second, they’re planning for different scenarios, like who will play against the new ball and how they will play.
Riyad missed some training days due to a family emergency, but he’s back on track now. He was practicing hitting big shots against practice bowlers and also joined the group for fielding exercises in the morning. Sohel mentioned that they communicated with Riyad about what he needs to focus on based on the team’s instructions. He’s in good shape, and with a few more sessions, he’ll get into a good rhythm.
Soumya, another backup player, is working on improving his batting skills to be ready if he’s needed. Sohel mentioned that Soumya knows which areas he needs to work on. The plans provided by the national team management will be really important in getting ready.
This backup plan is more than just a substitute option. These nine players are being trained to match the national team’s needs. They’re practicing intensely to be ready for specific roles and challenges. The training is set up to mimic the real team’s practice sessions. If they’re needed, they’ll be able to step in and perform effectively. The training camp might continue until the World Cup, and the guidance from the national team management is crucial for their preparation.
