Tilak Varma Returns to MI Line-up After Injury
The Mumbai Indians’ hopes for success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 received a boost as star batter Tilak Varma made his return to the playing XI for the crucial match against the Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator. Varma, who had been sidelined due to an injury, missed five group-stage matches, but his re-entry into the team could prove to be a game-changer.
In the absence of Varma, MI had relied on young talent Nehal Wadhera, who had impressed with his performances. Wadhera had showcased his skills during the match against the formidable Chennai Super Kings at the Chepauk stadium.
In that game, he played a lone hand, scoring an impressive 64 off 51 balls in MI’s total of 139. Despite his noteworthy efforts, MI fell short of victory against the Chennai-based franchise.
Team Changes
Now, with Varma back in the fold, MI faced a selection dilemma. Ultimately, the team management decided to include both Varma and Wadhera in the playing XI, providing them with options to strengthen their batting lineup. Wadhera’s inclusion would serve as a valuable backup in case Mumbai’s top-order fails to fire in Chennai.
Varma’s return is eagerly anticipated by MI fans, as he had been their most consistent performer during a challenging season. While Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav struggled to find their form, Varma stepped up and delivered impressive performances.
Making his debut for MI in 2022, Varma has already amassed 274 runs from just nine matches this season, making him a vital asset for the team.
MI’s IPL Journey
Mumbai Indians’ journey to the playoffs was a nail-biting one. On the final day of the group stage, they faced SunRisers Hyderabad and emerged victorious, giving themselves a chance to qualify for the playoffs.
However, their fate was not entirely in their hands. They had to rely on the result of the match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Gujarat Titans. Fortunately for MI, RCB faltered, losing their match and paving the way for the Mumbai-based franchise to secure the final playoff spot.
This achievement marked a significant milestone for MI as it was their first time reaching the IPL playoffs in three years. Despite being one of the most successful teams in the tournament’s history, having won the title in 2020, MI had failed to make it to the top four in the past two editions.
The return to the playoffs was a moment of redemption for the team and their fans, who were eager to witness their beloved franchise in contention for the coveted IPL trophy once again.
The Latest on Mumbai Indians
In their match against LSG Uttarakhand engineer Akash Madhwal showcased his bowling prowess, claiming a remarkable five-wicket haul, to propel the Mumbai Indians closer to the IPL summit clash with an emphatic 81-run victory over the Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator. ‘
Mumbai Indians posted a competitive total of 182 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs, which seemed slightly insufficient against the explosive batting lineup of Lucknow. However, Madhwal’s extraordinary figures of 5 for 5 in just 3.3 overs, along with the exceptional fielding led by captain Rohit Sharma, saw the Gautam Gambhir mentored side collapse for a meager 101 in 16.3 overs. Three run-outs added to the misery for the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise.
In the second Qualifier on Friday in Ahmedabad, Mumbai Indians will now face the Gujarat Titans to determine who will challenge the Chennai Super Kings in the highly anticipated final on Sunday.
