The wife of former Zimbabwe cricket captain Heath Streak has sadly revealed his passing following a courageous battle with cancer. Nadine Streak confirmed this heartbreaking news on Sunday, dispelling false reports of his death that had surfaced just over a week earlier.

“In the early hours of this morning … the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children, was carried to be with the angels from his home where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and his closest loved ones,” Nadine wrote on Facebook. “He was covered in love and peace and did not walk off the park alone. Our souls are joined for eternity Streaky. Till I hold you again.”

Streak had been receiving medical treatment in South Africa after receiving a diagnosis of colon and liver cancer earlier this year. “Heath has cancer and is undergoing treatment under one of the most respected oncologists in South Africa,” his family said in a statement at the time of his diagnosis. “He remains in good spirits and will continue to fight this disease in a similar vein to that which his opponents faced during his revered days on the cricket field.”

In late last month, Heath Streak’s former teammate Henry Olonga was compelled to make an embarrassing retraction after mistakenly announcing Streak’s death. Olonga clarified, “I can confirm that rumours of the demise of Heath Streak have been greatly exaggerated. I just heard from him. The third umpire has called him back. He is very much alive, folks.”

Heath Streak was a remarkable fast bowler and a proficient batsman. He played a pivotal role in the Zimbabwean cricket teams that demonstrated competitiveness against cricket’s major nations during the late 1990s and early 2000s. His all-round abilities made him a valuable asset to the side.

Heath Streak holds the record as Zimbabwe’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Test matches with 216 wickets and scoring 1990 runs in 65 Test matches spanning from 1993 to 2005. He also played 189 one-day internationals, amassing 2943 runs and taking 239 wickets. In his 254 international matches across all formats, he achieved a remarkable tally of 455 wickets and contributed 4983 runs, including one century and 11 half-centuries.

Following his retirement, Streak transitioned into coaching, working with the national teams of Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. He also served as the bowling coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, where the team secured two T20 championships during his tenure as part of the coaching staff.

In 2021, Heath Streak received an eight-year ban from cricket after acknowledging violations of the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption code. He took full responsibility for his actions but maintained that he was not involved in any efforts to manipulate match outcomes.

Zimbabwe Cricket’s official Twitter account expressed their condolences, stating, “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and fans of former (Zimbabwe) captain Heath Streak. His contributions to cricket will always be remembered, and he will be dearly missed. Rest in peace.”
