BCCI Announces Punishment For Gambhir and Kohli
Tensions ran high during the recent IPL match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Lucknow Super Giants(LSG), resulting in fines for several players. The altercation between RCB stalwart Virat Kohli and LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir caused a stir and led to both players receiving hefty fines for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.
The row began during the end of Lucknow’s innings when Kohli was seen having a heated chat with the on-field umpires. An over later, Kohli and Naveen clashed on the field, exchanging words and gestures. The situation escalated when Kohli showed his shoe to Naveen before pointing at him. It was not clear what Kohli was trying to say, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was not happy.
Results of the Argument
The argument resulted in both players being fined 100 percent of their match fees. The incident occurred on May 1 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
According to an IPL media release, Gambhir was fined for admitting to a Level 2 offense under Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct, while Kohli was fined for committing the same offense. After the game, Kohli and Gambhir got into a heated altercation, which required RCB skipper Faf du Plessis and Vijay Dahiya, the LSG assistant coach, to intervene.
LSG right-arm fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq was also fined 50 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct during the match.
Highlights of the Match
While there was drama for both teams, the match between RCB and LSG was an interesting game. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) managed to secure a hard-fought victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
RCB struggled to build momentum in their innings despite a decent 62-run opening partnership between Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli. LSG’s Ravi Bishnoi and Amit Mishra performed well with the ball during the middle overs, which restricted RCB to a below-average score of 126 runs after being asked to bat first.
LSG had a terrible start to their innings while chasing a modest target of 127 runs. They lost their first three wickets for just 21 runs in 4.1 overs. In the absence of Rahul, Kyle Mayers, and Ayush Badoni opened the innings but could not make an impact.
Despite the required run rate being under control, LSG kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Naveen-ul-Haq and Amit Mishra put up a brave fight with a 26-run partnership for the ninth wicket, but it was not enough. An injured Rahul came out to bat last but failed to score any runs due to discomfort. Eventually, LSG collapsed to 108 all out, giving RCB an 18-run victory.
Overall, it was a challenging match for both teams due to injuries and a low-scoring game. Despite the obstacles, RCB managed to secure a win with a determined performance.
Aftermath of the Fines
Interestingly, the controversy didn’t end there. Both Kohli and Naveen took to their Instagram stories to post cryptic messages. Kohli’s message was attributed to Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor, but the quote was not entirely accurate. Naveen’s message read, “You get what you deserve that’s how it should be and that’s how it goes.”
The incident has once again brought the issue of player behavior and the need for discipline in the IPL to the forefront. While fans may enjoy the drama on the field, players need to maintain decorum and respect for the game. The IPL has set a precedent by imposing fines, but it remains to be seen if this will deter future incidents.
