Bangladesh Rewards Trio For Choosing National Team
In a move that highlights the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) commitment to the national team, they announced on Monday that they had compensated three senior cricketers a total of $65,000 for choosing to represent their country rather than participate in the highly lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) this season.
The BCB’s cricket operations chief, Jalal Yunus, stated that this compensation was a small gesture to express the board’s appreciation for the players’ decision. The amount will be divided equally between Shakib Al Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, and Litton Das, with no formal demand made by the players themselves.
Yunus further elaborated that while the board believes playing for the national team should be unconditional, they recognized the need to assess each case individually, taking into account the players’ well-being. He emphasized that player welfare is one of their priorities. The BCB aims to strike a balance between encouraging players to prioritize national duty and understanding their personal circumstances.
Shakib Al Hasan, a prominent figure in Bangladesh cricket, was selected by the Kolkata Knight Riders for this year’s IPL. However, due to a clash with Bangladesh’s series against Ireland, Shakib made the tough decision to withdraw from the IPL and prioritize his commitments with the national team. The BCB did not grant clearance for Shakib and vice-captain Litton Das until they fulfilled their responsibilities in the one-off Test against Ireland held in Dhaka from April 4 to 8. This move exemplifies the board’s unwavering stance on prioritizing international duty over franchise tournaments.
Litton Das, who received his maiden call-up for the IPL this season, was also chosen by the Kolkata Knight Riders. After participating in the Test match against Ireland, Litton joined the franchise but made the decision to return home after playing just one game. His dedication to representing Bangladesh demonstrates his commitment and loyalty to the national team.
Meanwhile, Taskin Ahmed, despite going unsold in the IPL players’ auction, received an offer to join a team as an injury replacement. Although he did not ultimately participate in the IPL, his willingness to step in highlights his readiness to contribute to the national team whenever required.
It is worth mentioning that Mustafizur Rahman was the only Bangladeshi player who had an extended stint with his IPL team, the Delhi Capitals, this season. However, he was only able to make appearances in two matches, limiting his overall involvement in the tournament. Nevertheless, his participation provided him with valuable exposure and experience playing alongside some of the world’s top cricketers.
The BCB’s decision to compensate players who chose national duty over the IPL sends a strong message about the importance of prioritizing representing Bangladesh. While the compensation arrangement is not intended to become a regular practice, it serves as a token of appreciation and recognition for the players’ sacrifice. The board aims to foster a culture where players are motivated to represent their country wholeheartedly, with their well-being and personal circumstances taken into consideration.
