BCB Awards 35L Bonus to Bangladesh Women’s Cricket Team
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) proudly announced a substantial financial bonus of Tk 35 lakhs for the national women’s cricket team to recognize their remarkable success in the recently concluded ODI series against the formidable Indian side.
BCB president, Nazmul Hasan, met with the Tigresses during a delightful lunch meeting held on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Addressing the media, he enthusiastically declared the rewarding news, acknowledging the team’s extraordinary achievement.
The Tigresses scripted history by achieving their maiden ODI victory against India, a remarkable feat that will forever be etched in the annals of Bangladesh cricketing history. Demonstrating exceptional skill and determination, they managed to draw the series 1-1, signifying a moment of immense pride for the entire nation.
The excitement didn’t end with the ODI series as Bangladesh also competed fiercely in the T20I leg of the tour, clinching a memorable victory in one of the three matches. Although they eventually fell short in the T20I series 2-1, their competitiveness and spirit shone through, garnering praise and respect from cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
BCB president Nazmul Hasan highlighted the team’s stellar performances as the reason behind the special bonus announcement. While customary to offer bonuses for series victories, the BCB decided to recognize the historic ODI win against India with a commendable Tk 25 lakhs bonus for the players. Additionally, individual performances were also rewarded, with Tk 2 lakhs bonus for the century scorers and other players who contributed significantly to the team’s success. Including the bonus for the coaching staff, the total bonus amount reached an impressive Tk 35 lakhs.
As joyous as the occasion was, the series’ celebratory atmosphere was somewhat tainted by an unfortunate incident involving the Indian team captain, Harmanpreet Kaur. Displaying unsporting behavior, Harmanpreet’s outbursts during the game and at the prize-giving ceremony garnered attention and criticism from various quarters.
During a crucial moment in the match, Harmanpreet was visibly agitated after being given out and expressed her frustration by smashing the stumps—an act not befitting the spirit of the game. The situation escalated further during the prize-giving ceremony, where she made derogatory remarks about the umpiring, creating a tense and uncomfortable atmosphere.
In an unexpected turn of events, Harmanpreet’s demeanor worsened during the customary photo session involving players from both teams. Her outburst of “bring the umpires too” insinuated that the umpires were biased towards the home team, creating further unrest among players and fans alike.
Bangladesh’s captain, Nigar Sultana, expressed her disappointment over the incident, and she promptly took her players back to the dressing room. BCB officials were made aware of the situation, and while they refrained from immediate comments, they indicated that the matter would be handed over to the appropriate regulatory bodies for review and potential action.
President Nazmul Hasan, while avoiding direct comments on the incident, emphasized that cricket has well-defined rules and regulations in place, which are followed diligently by players and officials alike. He expressed confidence that the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the match referee would take necessary steps to address the matter appropriately.
“Cricket is such a game where everyone knows its rules and regulations, and the entire world has witnessed what happened. So, we have nothing to say as there are rules and regulations, and those will be applied accordingly. We have nothing to say since there is a match referee and umpires, and the ICC will take necessary steps. But I am happy to see that our girls didn’t do anything like that,” said the BCB chief.
