Yuzvendra Chahal Slated for County Stint with Kent
Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who was not chosen by the national selectors for the Asia Cup and the upcoming ODI World Cup, has decided to join the English county team Kent to participate in three County Championship matches.
Chahal, who also represented India at the youth level in chess, will be eligible for selection in Kent’s upcoming two home Championship matches against Nottinghamshire and Lancashire, in addition to the away match against Somerset.
“Kent Cricket is delighted to announce the signing of India international leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for the Club’s remaining County Championship matches, subject to regulatory approval,” Kent announced in an official statement. Kent currently finds themselves second from the bottom in the County Champions Division 1 table, among the ten teams, and there’s a risk of them being demoted to Division 2 for the next season.
“We’re delighted to have secured a spinner of Yuzvendra’s quality for the last three Championship matches of the season, with Matt Parkinson not available to us until next year, and Hami Qadri recently injured,” Kent’s director of cricket Paul Downton said. “He is really looking forward to playing in English conditions and will bring a significant amount of skill and international experience to our squad.”

A Showcase of Talent: Rohit’s Standout Performances
Earlier in the season, Kent had enlisted the help of fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, who participated in five matches during June and July, securing 13 wickets across eight bowling innings. Currently, New Zealand’s Ben Lister is the other overseas player on Kent’s roster.
“This is an exciting challenge for me, playing in English county cricket, and one I’m very much looking forward to,” Chahal said in the statement.
Chahal, who hasn’t consistently featured in first-class cricket, took part in two matches during the last season of the Ranji Trophy for Haryana, his domestic team in India. In these games, he managed to secure three wickets with an average of 92.33. In his overall first-class career, he has taken 87 wickets in 33 matches. However, he is more renowned for his performances in white-ball cricket, where he has achieved 121 wickets in 72 ODIs with an average of 27.13 and 96 wickets in 80 T20Is, maintaining an economy rate of 8.19. It’s worth noting that he has never played Test cricket.

Yuzvendra Chahal, despite limited first-class experience, made a mark in T20 cricket and earned an IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians in 2011. However, he didn’t get many chances with Mumbai. In 2014, he was picked by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where he played a crucial role in their bowling unit. He had a strong season in the UAE but struggled once the IPL returned to India, although he maintained good economy rates. He was a contender for the Emerging Player of the Year but lost to Axar Patel.
Chahal later became a key spinner for RCB, relying on his skiddy bowling style and accuracy. His success led to his selection in the Indian team for T20 and ODI formats. He impressed during the Zimbabwe tour in 2016 and further elevated his game during England’s visit in 2016-17, where he recorded outstanding figures of 6/25 in a T20I match. He continued to perform well, putting himself in contention for the 2019 Cricket World Cup as India’s wrist-spinning option.
