Kohli Breaks Tendulkar’s Record After Asia Cup Ton
On Monday, September 11, Virat Kohli achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the quickest batsman to reach 13,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). This achievement saw him surpass the record set by Sachin Tendulkar in 2004 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.
In the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup, Kohli surpassed 13,000 ODI runs, becoming the fifth player in men’s ODIs to reach this landmark. The other players who achieved this milestone before him are Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Mahela Jayawardene.
What makes Kohli’s achievement even more remarkable is that he reached 13,000 ODI runs in just 267 innings, making him the fastest player to reach this milestone. Tendulkar took 321 innings to achieve the same feat, while Ponting (341) and Sangakkara (363) also took over 300 innings. Jayasuriya reached the mark in 416 innings. Additionally, Kohli is the only one among these five players to maintain an average of over 50 in ODIs.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, who hails from Delhi, scored his 47th century in ODIs, and he is now only two centuries short of matching Sachin Tendulkar’s record of centuries in the 50-over format of international cricket. In the third ball of the 48th over, Kohli reached his hundred by gently guiding the ball to the off side off Shaheen Shah Afridi.

A Showcase of Talent: Rohit’s Standout Performances
At 34 years old, Kohli is just two centuries shy of equaling Tendulkar’s remarkable record of centuries in ODI cricket. Kohli currently stands as the fifth-highest run-scorer in the history of the 50-over format, accumulating 13,024 runs at an impressive average of 58.62. In contrast, the former India captain Tendulkar amassed 18,426 runs in 452 innings while representing Team India.
In the match, Kohli started his innings with a score of seven runs from the previous day and survived an early review for a caught behind off Naseem Shah’s bowling. He displayed exceptional form thereafter, forming a strong partnership with KL Rahul, who also reached his century. This partnership contributed to India posting a formidable total in Colombo.
The duo of Rahul and Kohli outperformed the previous record holders, Pakistan’s Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez, who had a partnership of 224 runs against India in 2012.
Kohli came to bat after a strong start by Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma for the Indian team. Rohit was dismissed by Shadab Khan, and that’s when Kohli entered the game. Shortly after, Gill was also dismissed, falling victim to Shaheen Shah Afridi’s skillful bowling.
When rain interrupted the match, Kohli was at the crease with eight runs to his name. Play resumed on the reserve day at 4:40 PM IST, and Kohli initially seemed a bit cautious about getting his innings started. However, he gradually increased his scoring rate and reached his half-century after facing 55 balls.
Once he reached fifty, Kohli began to take a more aggressive approach, attacking the Pakistani bowlers. During this period, he also formed a partnership worth 100 runs with KL Rahul, who had returned to the team after recovering from an injury.
