Bangladesh had a strong start in their only Test match against Afghanistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, putting themselves in a commanding position at the end of Day 1. They finished the day with a score of 362 runs for the loss of five wickets in 79 overs.

The Afghans got off to a decent start as Nijat Masood dismissed Zakir Hossain in the second over of the day, becoming the eighth bowler in Test cricket history to pick up a wicket off the very first ball. However, their joy was short-lived as Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudul Hasan Joy took control of the innings.

Shanto and Joy formed a remarkable partnership, accumulating 212 runs for the second wicket and putting the Bangladeshi team in a dominant position. Shanto, who narrowly missed out on the Player of the Month award in May, displayed tremendous determination and reached his third Test century. The left-handed batsman played aggressively, smashing 146 runs off just 175 balls, including 23 boundaries and two sixes.

Joy, who replaced the injured Tamim Iqbal in the lineup, capitalized on the opportunity and contributed an impressive 76 runs off 37 balls, featuring nine fours. Their partnership not only solidified Bangladesh’s innings but also put immense pressure on the Afghan bowlers.

However, Mominul Haque Showrabh and Litton Das failed to capitalize on their chances and were disappointed to miss out with the bat. Fortunately for Bangladesh, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz stepped up and formed an unbeaten partnership of 72 runs for the sixth wicket, finishing the day on a positive note.

Rahim remained unbeaten on 41 runs, displaying his experience and skill, while Mehidy also contributed significantly with an unbeaten 43 runs. The Afghan bowlers struggled with their line and length, conceding 15 no balls and seven wides throughout the day. Zahir Khan Pakteen, the left-arm wrist spinner, was particularly disappointing as he bowled eight no balls and leaked 98 runs in his 16 overs.

Despite their erratic performance, Masood, making his debut, managed to pick up two wickets and showcased his potential as a bowler. Rahmat Shah played a crucial role by dismissing the well-set Joy, providing some respite for the Afghan team. Karim Janat, although economical, couldn’t break through the Bangladeshi batting lineup.

Bangladesh will enter Day 2 with confidence and a strong platform to build upon. Their dominant performance on Day 1 puts them in a favorable position to extend their lead and potentially push for a comprehensive victory against Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Afghanistan will need to regroup and find ways to bounce back in the match, with the hope of restricting Bangladesh’s total and staging a comeback in their own batting innings. The upcoming days promise exciting cricket as both teams battle it out for supremacy in this only Test match.

As the contest between Bangladesh and Afghanistan unfolds, cricket enthusiasts around the world eagerly await to witness more exciting moments and noteworthy performances from both teams. The battle for supremacy in this solitary Test match promises to be an engaging and enthralling spectacle for fans and players alike.
