Bangladesh won the second Twenty20 international match against Afghanistan by six wickets, winning the two-match series 2-0. The match took place in the city of Sylhet and witnessed opener Liton Das shine with his impressive batting performance, leading Bangladesh to a well-deserved victory.

Liton’s exceptional innings formed the foundation of Bangladesh’s victory, as he contributed 35 runs and formed a crucial partnership of 67 runs with Afif Hossain (24). Their combined efforts propelled Bangladesh to a commanding total of 119/4 in just 16.1 overs. This formidable score was achieved after Taskin Ahmed, with his impressive bowling figures of 3/33, played a significant role in restricting Afghanistan to a modest 116/7 in a rain-reduced contest spanning 17 overs.

Sunday’s victory marked Bangladesh’s third consecutive T20I series win and their first triumph against Afghanistan in three attempts. Earlier this year, Bangladesh secured notable victories against world champions England, defeating them 3-0, and Ireland, defeating them 2-1. These accomplishments showcased the team’s improving performance on the international stage.

Afghanistan’s hopes of staging a comeback were dashed when off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman struck quickly, removing Liton and Afif in consecutive deliveries, breaking their solid opening partnership. Azmatullah Omarzai added to Bangladesh’s woes by bowling out Nazmul Hossain Shanto for a mere four runs. However, skipper Shakib al Hasan and the young Towhid Hridoy showcased remarkable resilience, forging a crucial 31-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Their partnership prevented any further collapse and paved the way for Bangladesh’s victory.

Despite a challenging situation, Shakib remained confident in his team’s ability to secure a win. “We lost a couple of wickets, but given the start we had, we were always ahead,” he stated during the post-match presentation ceremony. He also acknowledged the tough conditions for Afghanistan’s spinners, emphasizing his team’s strategic advantage.

In contrast, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan refused to make any excuses and admitted that his team fell short in terms of skills, particularly in batting. “Weather is not an excuse for a team. T20 should be decided on skills, and we were not good enough there, especially in batting,” Rashid acknowledged.

Omarzai played a significant role in attempting to revive Afghanistan’s innings, displaying impressive bowling figures of 2/17. However, his efforts were not enough to halt Bangladesh’s momentum. Shakib, with his unbeaten 18 runs, steered Bangladesh to a comfortable victory, with the team reaching the target with four balls to spare. Shakib also contributed with the ball, claiming 2/15, while Mustafizur Rahman secured 2/30. Bangladesh’s decision to bowl first proved fruitful, as their bowlers made Afghanistan struggle throughout their innings.

The match faced a brief interruption due to rain, causing a delay of one-and-a-half hours after just seven overs. As a result, the match officials reduced the contest to 17 overs per side. Despite the weather interruptions, Bangladesh showcased their dominance in the game, overpowering their opponents with their exceptional skills and determination.

This victory added to the team’s recent accomplishments, with Bangladesh securing a record-breaking win against Afghanistan in the one-off Test match, winning by a staggering 546 runs. However, Afghanistan had their moment of glory in the three-game one-day international series, emerging triumphant with a 2-1 victory.

Bangladesh’s win against Afghanistan in the T20I series shows the team’s consistent growth and improved performance on the international stage. They are winning against tough teams and becoming strong in the cricket world.
