Bangladesh wins 2-0 in ODI Against Ireland
Bangladesh held their nerve to secure a thrilling five-run victory over Ireland in the third and final one-day international match of their series. The match, held at the headquarters of the English county Essex, was a nail-biting affair that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very last ball.
Bangladesh had the upper hand after posting a total of 274 all out, with captain Tamim Iqbal leading the way with a score of 69.

The Irish team got off to a solid start, with opener Paul Stirling, captain Andrew Balbirnie, and Lorcan Tucker all making fifties. However, they were unable to produce the match-winning innings they needed and were held to a total of 269-9, thanks in no small part to the excellent bowling of Mustafizur Rahman. The left-arm quick took four wickets for just 44 runs from his ten overs, including several top-order batsmen.
Ireland had looked well-placed to secure victory, needing just 51 off nine overs with seven wickets in hand. However, a stunning diving catch by Liton Das off the bowling of Najmul Hossain removed Harry Tector for 45, and the Irish batting order collapsed under the pressure.
The victory gave Bangladesh a 2-0 win in the three-match series, with one match having been washed out. The win was especially important for Bangladesh, who are currently in ninth place in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League standings, just behind the West Indies.
The top seven teams in the Super League will automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup in India, with the remaining five teams having to play in a qualifying tournament.
Ireland had been hoping to secure a clean sweep of victories in the series in order to secure automatic entry into the World Cup. However, the washout on Tuesday and the defeat on Sunday mean that they will now have to compete in the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in June and July.
The Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal acknowledged that his team had been under pressure during the match, but said that the squad had believed they could win. “When ‘the Fizz’ got two wickets, we thought we had a chance,” he said. The Fizz, as Rahman is known, was named player of the match for his superb bowling performance.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s captain, Andy Balbirnie, was left to rue his team’s collapse in the last ten overs, stating that one of their batsmen needed to stay in and score a century.
With the ODI series over, both teams will now shift their focus to the T20I series, with the first match scheduled to take place on 22 May at the same venue.
The match was a thrilling example of the excitement and drama that cricket can offer, and both teams deserve credit for their performances. Despite the disappointment of missing out on automatic qualification for the World Cup, Ireland will take heart from their strong performances in the series and will no doubt be hoping to build on them in the coming months.
