The forthcoming announcement of India’s squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 is anticipated to occur on September 3, as sources reveal. This crucial unveiling will transpire just two days prior to the cutoff for declaring provisional squads. Remarkably, the revelation will follow the high-stakes Asia Cup clash between India and Pakistan in Kandy.

There exists a window for potential changes to the squad up until September 28, merely seven days before the World Cup’s initiation in Ahmedabad. This timeline is of significance as India’s schedule includes a 3-match ODI series against Australia subsequent to the Asia Cup, slated for September 21 to 27.

Considering the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the fitness of key players, especially KL Rahul, India is poised to potentially include standby players in the provisional squad. The prolonged fitness concerns have prompted these strategic measures.

In preparation for the Asia Cup 2023 campaign, India unveiled an extended 17-member squad. This ensemble also accommodated a traveling reserve, Sanju Samson, designated as cover for KL Rahul. This tactical move emerged after chief selector Ajit Agarkar disclosed that the captain of Lucknow Super Giants had encountered a new setback.

Shedding light on the decision to include both Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul in the Asia Cup squad despite their prolonged injury recoveries. Agarkar’s statement from August 2021 confirmed Iyer’s fitness. Meanwhile, Rahul’s participation was jeopardized by an unrelated fresh niggle, separate from his prior thigh injury. As a result, Rahul’s availability for India’s opening match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup appeared uncertain.

India has completed 2 matches within the Asia Cup’s group stage ahead of the looming provisional World Cup squad announcement deadline.

India’s choices also encompassed the selection of 20-year-old Tilak Varma in the Asia Cup squad, a decision based on his promising T20I debut in the West Indies. Varma is yet to debut in ODIs, and it remains improbable that he will make an appearance against Pakistan. India retained Suryakumar Yadav in the Asia Cup squad, despite his recent challenges in ODIs. Additionally, Prasidh Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah were reinstated, showcasing their prowess upon returning from injuries during the Ireland tour in August.

In a bid to enhance their preparation, Indian players have been actively participating in fitness and skill training at a specialized camp situated in Alur, near Bengaluru. The camp witnessed KL Rahul’s presence in the nets on Friday, while Ishan Kishan, a notable wicketkeeper-batter, honed his keeping skills under the guidance of fielding coach T Dilip.

The forthcoming selection process raises the pertinent question of which players might face omission from the provisional ODI squad. Given the limited number of competitive matches on the horizon, opportunities for players to assert their claims remain scarce.
