BFF Aims to Have Men’s Football Team in Asian Games
Bangladesh Football Federation’s (BFF) vice-president, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, has announced that they are pushing to have the men’s football team included in the contingent for the Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, in September this year.
The announcement came after the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) decided not to send the men’s team due to a lack of performance. The decision was made during an executive committee meeting, but Ahmed and Mohiuddin Ahmed, another vice-president of BFF, attended a meeting of the National Teams Committee the following day, where they discussed including the men’s team.
Bangladesh made it to the knockout phase of the Asian Games men’s football event for the first time in 2018. Despite this, BOA treasurer AK Sarkar confirmed that they had decided to send 17 teams to the games, but the men’s football team was not included. Sarkar cited the team’s poor performance as the reason behind the omission.
Statements on the Announcement
However, Ahmed insisted that they were in discussions with the BOA to have the men’s team onboard. He confirmed that the BFF was hoping that the men’s team would also be included in the Asian Games. Ahmed claimed that he had spoken to the BOA president and informed him that the men’s team needed to be sent.
Meanwhile, BFF President Kazi Salahuddin expressed his disappointment over the decision to omit the men’s team from the Asian Games contingent.
The inclusion of the men’s football team in the Asian Games contingent is critical to the sport’s development in the country. Bangladesh’s participation in international football events has been minimal over the years, and a successful outing in the Asian Games would help raise the sport’s profile in the country.
What is the Asian Games?
The Asian Games is a continental multi-sport event that is held every four years. It features athletes from across Asia competing in various sporting events such as athletics, swimming, basketball, football, and many others.
The first edition of the Asian Games was held in 1951 in New Delhi, India, and since then, it has grown to become one of the largest sporting events in the world. The Asian Games is organized by the Olympic Council of Asia and attracts thousands of athletes and millions of spectators from all over Asia.
It provides an excellent platform for athletes to showcase their skills, gain exposure, and represent their countries on the international stage.
A Waiting Game
In conclusion, the BFF’s push to include the men’s football team in the Asian Games contingent is a welcome move for the development of football in Bangladesh. The sport has a massive following in the country, and the inclusion of the men’s team in the games would provide an excellent opportunity for them to compete at the highest level and gain valuable experience.
It remains to be seen whether the BOA will reconsider its decision, but the BFF’s efforts are commendable. Fans will have to keep an ear out for what decision will end up falling through.
