CSK Coach Comments on Dhoni’s Batting Duration

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) once again showed their dominance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as they beat the Delhi Capitals (DC) by 27 runs. The team’s skipper MS Dhoni may have looked a bit uncomfortable while running between the wickets, but his power-hitting skills were still on display.

Following the match, CSK’s head coach Stephen Fleming revealed that Dhoni has been training differently this year, focusing more on power-hitting and less on playing long innings. “He has just trained in a certain way. He knows he is not going to bat for a long time, and we had a lot of batting ahead. So, he has really concentrated on the last three overs,” said Fleming in a post-match press conference.

Dhoni’s cameo of 32* off 17 balls included three boundaries and two sixes, and it was his power-hitting that helped CSK set a challenging target of 168 for DC. The CSK skipper has been batting down the order this year and has scored 96 runs in eight innings at an average of 48.00, with a strike rate of 204.25.

Fleming added that he is happy with the way his players are playing with high risks, and the cameos are pushing the team to above-par scores. “It is a reflection of the way games now are played, the players play with more high risks and the way you compose an innings is a little bit different, so I’m happy with the cameos if it keeps pushing you above par,” he said.

Apart from Dhoni’s quickfire knock, Ravindra Jadeja also played a crucial role in helping CSK reach a good total. Jadeja smashed 29 runs off just 14 balls, including three fours and a six, before being dismissed by DC’s pacer Kagiso Rabada.

“It is a reflection of the way games now are played, the players play with more high risks and the way you compose an innings is a little bit different, so I’m happy with the cameos if it keeps pushing you above par,” said Fleming.

“What you have seen today, maybe a 160 wicket was turned into almost a possible 175-10 because we had positive intent through partnerships and guys playing aggressively. Dube is a good example of that, Rayudu and then MS in the end. We created enough to get ahead of the game, which we are happy with, even though we lost seven wickets,” added the coach.

In the second innings, CSK’s young pacer Matheesha Pathirana impressed everyone with his three-wicket haul. He dismissed DC’s openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan, and then picked up the wicket of DC’s skipper Rishabh Pant.

With this win, CSK consolidated their position at the top of the IPL 2023 points table with 16 points from 10 matches. They have won eight matches so far and lost just two.

On the other hand, DC are still struggling to find their form this season. They are currently in seventh place with just four points from nine matches and are in danger of not qualifying for the playoffs.

It was yet another impressive performance from the CSK team, with their skipper MS Dhoni leading the way with his power-hitting skills. While Dhoni may not be batting for long periods this year, his ability to hit the ball out of the park in the death overs makes him a valuable asset to the team. With just a few matches left in the league stage, CSK will be looking to maintain their winning momentum and secure their place in the playoffs.
