Manchester United suffered their third Premier League loss of the season, with Brighton defeating them 3-1 at Old Trafford. This signifies the end of Manchester United’s 20-game unbeaten streak at Old Trafford, with Brighton securing their fourth consecutive victory against Manchester United in the Premier League. Notably, Brighton is the first team outside of the ‘big six’ to achieve this feat.

Danny Welbeck scored against his former team, and additional goals from Pascal Gross and substitute Joao Pedro added to the pressure on Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag.

Hannibal Mejbri’s first goal for Manchester United offered a glimmer of hope to the home fans, but the final whistle was met with boos as another defeat left United in the lower half of the table.

On the other hand, Manchester City continued their perfect start to the season by coming from behind to win 3-1 against West Ham. James Ward-Prowse’s diving header gave West Ham a halftime lead against the run of play. However, Jeremy Doku scored his first goal for City just a minute into the second half, and Bernardo Silva put them ahead with 14 minutes remaining. Erling Haaland’s seventh goal in five league games sealed the victory for the reigning champions.

Manchester United fans expressed their displeasure with manager Erik ten Hag’s decision to substitute new signing Rasmus Hojlund during the 3-1 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford, with loud jeers echoing throughout the stadium. The substitution occurred in the 64th minute, with Hojlund, an $82 million acquisition from Atalanta, being replaced by substitute Anthony Martial. The crowd’s reaction was marked by boos.

Ten Hag defended the decision, explaining that Hojlund, who had missed the start of the season due to injury, was taken off as a precautionary measure.

“He is not ready for a whole game and we have many games to play at short notice, so we have to build the fitness,” the Dutch coach said.

In his first start for Manchester United and his debut in front of the home crowd, Hojlund had a first-half goal disallowed after a VAR review. However, with Manchester United needing to stage a comeback after conceding goals from Danny Welbeck and Pascal Gross, Ten Hag decided to substitute him.

The crowd did not seem pleased with the decision and expressed their discontent loudly. Yet, despite the initial jeers, fans later showed their appreciation for the striker’s efforts by applauding him as he exited the field.

Unfortunately for Manchester United and Ten Hag, the substitution didn’t yield the desired results. Brighton further extended their lead when substitute Joao Pedro found the net in the 71st minute, adding to the challenges Ten Hag was facing at the start of the season.

Prior to this match, Manchester United had already lost two out of their first four games in the season, and off-field issues involving players like Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, and Antony were adding to the club’s troubles.

Ten Hag was in need of a win to lift the spirits around the club, but they fell behind 1-0 in the 20th minute after former United striker Welbeck scored from close range. Manchester United tried to respond, with Marcus Rashford’s shot deflected onto the crossbar after Joel Veltman’s sliding block.

Manchester United thought they had equalized just before halftime through Hojlund, but the goal was disallowed by VAR as the ball was deemed to have gone out of play before his finish.

In the second half, Pascal Gross scored for Brighton in the 53rd minute, following an assist from Tariq Lamptey. Joao Pedro added a third for Brighton before Manchester United’s substitute Hannibal Mejbri scored with a long-range shot in the 73rd minute.

Brighton had several opportunities to score more goals, but Andre Onana denied Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, and Ansu Fati late in the game. The match ended with more boos from the disappointed fans at the final whistle.
