Captain Liton Ready for Afghanistan Test
Liton Das, the 28-year-old Bangladeshi cricketer, is set to lead his team in the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan. While there were reports suggesting that Liton was skeptical about assuming the role of captain, he confidently dismissed these speculations during a press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
Liton, who has previously served as the vice-captain of the team, mentioned that he had already taken on the responsibilities of leading the side for short periods when the regular captain, Shakib Al Hasan, was off the field. This prior experience had prepared him for the leadership role, and he expressed no concerns about stepping up to the challenge.
Despite his confidence, Liton admitted that he had yet to experience the excitement that often accompanies captaining a team. However, he acknowledged the honor and pride associated with being a Test cricketer and leading the national side in this format. He looked forward to the moment when he would walk out for the toss and hoped to feel the surge of excitement that comes with captaining a team.
The upcoming Test against Afghanistan presents a formidable challenge for Liton and the Bangladeshi team. They had previously faced Afghanistan in 2019 and suffered a heavy defeat by 224 runs. The decision to prepare a spin-friendly pitch against Afghanistan’s spin-heavy attack had backfired, and the Tigers were keen to avoid a similar outcome this time.
Liton acknowledged the change in strategy for the upcoming Test. Traditionally, matches in Mirpur have been played on spinning wickets, but this time they would be playing on a green surface. The team’s focus would be on adapting to the conditions and playing long innings, which Liton identified as the primary challenge for the batsmen.
The absence of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and the uncertainty surrounding Tamim Iqbal due to back issues posed additional challenges for Liton and the team. Liton believed that senior campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim would play a crucial role in providing stability at the top of the batting order in the absence of the regular openers.
In their previous encounter with Afghanistan, leg-spinner Rashid Khan had wreaked havoc, scalping 11 wickets and emerging as the destroyer in chief. However, Liton emphasized that the absence of Rashid for the upcoming Test would not change their approach. The team would take Afghanistan seriously and prepare accordingly, irrespective of the opposition’s lineup.
As Liton Das prepares to lead Bangladesh in the one-off Test against Afghanistan, he exudes confidence and determination. He understands the challenges that lie ahead and acknowledges the importance of adapting to the conditions and delivering solid performances. Liton’s leadership skills and the team’s collective efforts will be tested as they aim to secure a victory and redeem themselves from their previous encounter with Afghanistan.
