England plans to defend their championship title as they come to India for the upcoming 2023 ICC World Cup. They won the 2022 World Cup tournament by beating New Zealand in the final and are the current champions.

England is scheduled to participate in 9 matches in the preliminary phase of the ICC World Cup 2023. Consequently, they will compete against each team once before reaching the semi-finals. The last match of the league stage for England is set to take place on November 11th against Pakistan.

While England has clinched the ODI World Cup title just once in the 2019 edition, it’s worth noting that they have frequently advanced to the final in previous tournaments. This track record makes them one of the formidable teams in the ODI World Cup competition.

Although England heads into this year’s tournament in India with a slightly less stable team compared to four years ago and currently ranks fifth in the ICC men’s ODI team rankings, the return of Test captain Ben Stokes, who recently scored a record-breaking 182 against New Zealand at The Oval, adds to their strength. This shows that the current champions are still a formidable team.

A Showcase of Talent: Rohit’s Standout Performances

The big news from England’s squad announcement was the selection of Brook, which came at the cost of Jason Roy, the hero from the 2019 World Cup. Roy had to sit out the entire 3-1 series victory over New Zealand due to a series of back spasms.

Jos Buttler assumed the role of England’s captain in June 2022, shortly after Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket. Buttler, known for his exceptional skills as a wicketkeeper-batsman, brings a wealth of experience to the team, particularly in white-ball cricket. His familiarity with sub-continental conditions is a result of his performances in the Indian Premier League.

Jos Buttler has demonstrated his capabilities as an excellent leader, guiding England to victory at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia and taking the Manchester Originals to this year’s final of The Hundred.

In One Day Internationals (ODIs), the 33-year-old has amassed an impressive 4,823 runs and recorded 11 centuries. Notably, he holds the third-best strike rate in the history of ODI cricket (118.00).

Buttler’s highest ODI score was in June 2022 when he blazed an unbeaten 162 from just 70 balls against the Netherlands, contributing to England’s world-record total of 498-4. During that innings, he smashed fourteen of his career total of 162 sixes. To successfully defend their title, the defending champions will rely on their fearless captain’s boundary-hitting finesse.

England is worried about Mark Wood’s fitness for the World Cup, but they’ve brought in another fast bowler, Gus Atkinson from Surrey. Atkinson, a 25-year-old with a delivery speed of over 95mph and a smooth right-arm action like Jofra Archer, has risen quickly in the past year. He played for Islamabad United in the 2023 Pakistan Super League and received praise from Alastair Cook.

England’s preliminary 15-player World Cup squad includes: Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.
