English Premier League: Matchday 2 Preview
The 2023 / 2024 Premier League Matchday 2 kicks off this weekend with Nottingham Forest hosting newly promoted Sheffield United. Both sides will be looking to secure their first points of the new season with Forest favoured to win at home.
The last time the two sides met at the City Ground was in the Championship semi-final playoff in May 2022 with the Blades winning the game 2-1 but losing ultimately on penalties. Forest went on to beat Huddersfield in playoff finals to secure promotion. Forest won almost half of their home games last season and will be looking to secure the 3 points in Friday night’s game.
Saturday sees Liverpool hosting Bournemouth with the host hoping to secure their first win of the campaign. The Reds won 9-0 last season which resulted in then Bournemouth manager Scott Parker being sacked. It was also the joint highest scoring game in Premier League history.
Interestingly, Mo Salah was not involved in any of the 9 goals and will be looking to open his account this weekend after being denied a goal at Chelsea last weekend due to VAR. Former Liverpool player, Dominic Solanke will be looking to cause damage to his former club.
Spurs host Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium with Spurs looking to adapt to life without Harry Kane. New manager, Ange Postecoglu is looking for his first Premier League win but face a United side that are high on confidence.

In the similar fixture last season, Spurs crawled back from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw but they will find United harder to break down with new United keeper Andre Onana in goal. All signs point to a likely draw but one moment of brilliance from either side will likely win the match.
The late game on Saturday sees champions City host a resurgent Newcastle side. Both sides recorded big wins in Matchday 1 and will be looking to consolidate their position at the top of the table. Erling Haaland will need to be at his best if City is to come away with 3 points from this match.
New signings Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes will be looking to add on to their account after scoring on their home debut last weekend. This match will be a tightly contested affair with the battle in midfield likely to decide the outcome of the game.
The last game of Matchday 2 sees Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace host title challenger Arsenal on Monday night. A Gabriel Martinelli header and an own goal from Marc Guehi secured Arsenal a 2-0 win last season in the similar fixture.
Both London sides will be looking for their 2nd win to pile pressure on the top with Arsenal favoured to get the 3 points. Arsenal’s new signing Jurrien Timber will miss this game as he suffered a ACL injury that will likely seem him miss the majority of this current campaign.
Matchday 2 is shaping up to be another exciting weekend for football fans across the globe.
