Lucknow Super Giants has revealed that Justin Langer will be replacing Andy Flower as the team’s head coach. Flower’s departure comes after a successful two-year stint in which he focused on player development and team unity; Lucknow made it to the playoffs and secured a third-place finish on both occasions. Flower significantly impacted the team’s performance and helped establish them as formidable contenders in the competitive league.

As a former Australia Test batsman and the coach during the win at the Twenty20 World Cup in 2021, Langer brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success. He boasts an impressive coaching resume with Perth Scorchers, where he led them to victory at the Big Bash League three times.

Franchise owner, Sanjiv Goenka, expressed his excitement over Langer’s appointment.

I have enjoyed my interactions with Langer. He seems to bring in a huge amount of aggression and a lot of clarity.

Langer himself expressed his eagerness to be a part of the journey of building a great story for Lucknow in the IPL.

Langer’s journey to the Lucknow Super Giants was not without its challenges. He previously served as the Australian team coach before stepping down from his position. Langer’s resignation email to Cricket Australia (CA) boss Nick Hockley revealed that he was offered a short-term contract, which he rejected after careful consideration.

Last night I was offered a short-term contract until the end of the T20 World Cup in Australia, with the sentiment of ‘going out on a high.

After careful consideration, I have decided not to accept this contract renewal, and I believe it is in everyone’s best interests for the Australian cricket team to begin the next chapter immediately.

If media reports are correct, several senior players and a couple of staff don’t support me moving forwards. It is now apparent that the CA board and you are also continuing to see the team move in another direction. I respect that decision.”

Langer had assumed the role of head coach for the Australian national cricket team in 2018, replacing the coach in the aftermath of a ball-tampering scandal. He led the team to significant victories, including a 4-0 defeat of England in the Ashes test series and Australia’s first-ever victory in the Twenty20 World Cup. Langer worked to restore the team’s reputation, as well as reshape the team’s dynamics. His coaching style reportedly faced criticism from some players, leading to internal discontent within the team.

Former Test batsman Usman Khawaja, who had a prickly relationship with Langer, said that it appeared that disgruntled players were “stabbing” the coach in the back by leaking grievances about his intense management style to the media.

Despite the challenges, Langer left his position with his head held high, expressing pride in the team’s achievements and the spirit in which they played the game. His position as the head coach of Lucknow Super Giants marks a new chapter in his coaching career.
