Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made an exciting addition to their squad by signing up English cricketer Jason Roy as a replacement player. With two of their big names, Shreyas Iyer and Shakib Al Hasan, already out of the tournament, the addition of Roy is a welcome boost for the team.

The Knight Riders signed Roy for INR 2.8 crore (USD 341,000 approx.) at the pre-season auction, where his base price was INR 1.5 crore (USD 183,000 approx.).

English players are usually only allowed to sign replacement deals before March 1, but players with ECB central contracts or incremental deals are eligible to be signed after that date. Despite losing his central contract in October, Roy still has an incremental deal that makes him eligible to play.

Roy’s last IPL appearance was in 2021, where he represented Sunrisers Hyderabad and scored an impressive 150 runs from just five games, with an average of 30 and a strike rate of 123.96. He had opted out of the tournament in 2020 for personal reasons while playing for Delhi Capitals.

Before the announcement, some speculations started on Tuesday after Jason Roy started following Kolkata Knight Riders on Twitter, the only IPL team in his following list. There were rumors the two-time IPL champions may bring him in as a replacement, and it has finally been confirmed on Wednesday.

KKR’s Status

KKR has only played one game so far, which they lost to Punjab Kings by seven runs (DLS method) in Mohali. Nitish Rana will lead KKR for the entire season, as they look to bounce back from their defeat to PBKS in their opening game.
They are set to play their second game against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday at their home ground, Eden Gardens.
Roy will not be available for KKR’s next fixture against RCB on Thursday, as he will join the rest of the squad members in Ahmedabad ahead of their next match against Gujarat Titans on Sunday.

Other Players to Needing Replacements

KKR is not the only team with missing players in this year’s IPL. Several players got ruled out of the tournament due to injuries. These included Raj Angad Bawa and Rajat Patidar. Kane Williamson also suffered an injury and had to fly back to New Zealand.

These injuries have affected their teams’ balance and performance, making it a challenging season.

To overcome the absence of their key players, some teams have signed replacements. Punjab Kings have acquired Gurnoor Singh Brar and Gujarat Titans have named Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for Kane Williamson. Royal Challengers Bangalore is also looking for a replacement player to fill the void left by Rajat Patidar.

Losing Iyer to a lower-back injury, who will need surgery, and Shakib, who opted out of the season due to personal reasons, has been a setback for KKR, but the addition of Roy should give them a boost.

Despite the setbacks caused by injuries, the IPL season 16 continues to be a thrilling tournament, with teams giving their best to win crucial games.
