Kohli Achieves New Indian Premier League Record
In a thrilling match against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday, Virat Kohli achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first Indian cricketer to score 50 or more on 50 occasions in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The Royal Challengers Bangalore batter achieved this milestone by hitting his 45th IPL fifty off just 38 balls. Kohli also scored five centuries in the league, making him one of the most prolific run-scorers in IPL history.
With this achievement, Kohli surpassed Shikhar Dhawan’s record of 49 scores of 50-plus in the IPL, which includes 47 half-centuries and two centuries.
However, David Warner, the current captain of the Delhi Capitals, still holds the record for the most scores of 50 or more in the IPL. The Australian opener has crossed the 50-run mark 60 times in the league, with 56 half-centuries and four centuries to his name.
Other Achievements in the IPL Match
Thanks to Kohli’s efforts, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made a stunning start to their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians.
In addition to his news record, Kohli’s partnership with opening batsman, Faf du Plessis, produced an exhibition of sublime stroke-making as they chased down Mumbai’s total of 171 with 22 balls to spare.
Du Plessis scored 73 off 46 balls with the help of six fours and four sixes. Together, they produced a 148-run partnership to lead RCB to victory.
Highlights of the Match
Mumbai had a poor start, losing three wickets for just 20 runs. However, Tilak Varma smashed a scintillating 84 off 46 balls to single-handedly power Mumbai to a total of 171 for seven.
RCB’s bowlers reduced Mumbai to 99 for five before Varma added 50 and 48 runs with Nehal Wadhera and Arshad Khan for the fifth and eighth wickets, respectively. Varma’s knock included nine boundaries and four sixes.
RCB’s response was emphatic, as Kohli and Du Plessis scored at a rapid pace, racking up 30 runs in the first three overs. Mumbai’s bowlers struggled to contain them, and by the time Du Plessis perished in the 15th over, RCB needed just 28 runs off 34 balls.
Kohli completed the job, hitting a four and a six off Arshad Khan to knock off the winning runs and hand Mumbai their 11th consecutive defeat in their first match of the season.
Results of RCB’s Victory
The victory was a statement of intent from RCB, who have never won the IPL despite reaching the final three times. Kohli and Du Plessis showed that they will be a formidable opening pair this season, and the team will be hoping to build on this impressive start.
With the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Harshal Patel in their ranks, RCB will be looking to make a strong push for the title this year.
Unfortunately, they will now have to work around the loss of pacer Reece Topley, who injured his shoulder during the match. RCB head coach Mike Hesson provided an update on Topley’s injury status, stating that they are waiting for the initial reports of the England pacer.
Despite the setback, it was a fantastic start to the IPL season, with Kohli’s milestone and Varma’s superb knock being the standout performances.
