Kohli Returns to Train for WTC Final
India’s cricket fans were delighted as Virat Kohli, the country’s batting sensation and former captain, joined the national team’s training session at the beautiful Arundel Castle Cricket Club, on Monday. Kohli’s return to the squad has renewed hope and excitement for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at the Oval, scheduled from June 7 to 11.
Adding to the positive news, left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat also made a triumphant return to the training session after recovering from a left shoulder injury that had sidelined him. The duo’s active participation in the practice session was a welcome sight for the team management and fans, who have been eagerly awaiting their return.
Updates Shared
Pictures shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) showcased the team members, including Kohli, as they commenced their preparations for the highly anticipated WTC Final in England. Alongside Kohli, pacers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj were seen donning their new training kits and engaging in a light jog. Meanwhile, the talented off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin showcased his skills by rolling his arm over at the nets.
“Team India members begin their preparations for the WTC23 at Arundel Castle Cricket Club,” tweeted the BCCI, encapsulating the excitement surrounding the team’s training.
During the session, Jaydev Unadkat was observed deep in conversation with head coach Rahul Dravid and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, reflecting the team’s focused approach and strategic discussions ahead of the crucial encounter. The presence of Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been honing his skills by playing for Sussex in the English county circuit, further strengthens the squad’s preparations.
India Team So Far
The Indian team’s contingent for the WTC Final has been gradually assembling, with Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur among the first batch of players to arrive. Captain Rohit Sharma and promising Mumbai opener Yashasvi Jaiswal have also joined the team at the training venue.
The final batch of players, including Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Mohammad Shami, KS Bharat, and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, is scheduled to depart on Tuesday following the conclusion of the IPL final in Ahmedabad. This highlights the meticulous planning and coordination by the team management to ensure all players have ample time to prepare and acclimatize to the English conditions.
Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal was included in the squad as a stand-by player after Ruturaj Gaikwad informed the BCCI about his wedding on June 3-4. This demonstrates the team’s depth and preparedness for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise.
What to Expect with the WTC
India’s quest for redemption in the World Test Championship comes after their runners-up finish in 2021, where they suffered a defeat against New Zealand in the final held in Southampton. Determined to clinch the coveted title this time, the Indian team is leaving no stone unturned in their preparation.
Unlike previous tours, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is not obliged to arrange warm-up matches for the visiting team due to ongoing English County Championship commitments and the ICC’s jurisdiction. As a result, the Indian team will rely on their training sessions and individual practice to acclimatize to the English conditions ahead of the crucial encounter.
The WTC Final is expected to be a thrilling battle between two cricketing giants, and all eyes will be on the Indian team as they strive to etch their names in the history books by claiming the prestigious title. Fans around the world eagerly await the clash, and the excitement continues to build as the players prepare themselves for the ultimate challenge on the cricketing stage.
