Kylian Mbappe returned to Paris St Germain’s first team on Sunday, just a day after being excluded from the squad for the Ligue 1 season opener against Lorient. Reports suggest that he had been sidelined from the main squad for several weeks due to an ongoing contract dispute.

In their Ligue 1 title defense opener, PSG started their campaign at home against Lorient on Saturday. However, Kylian Mbappe observed the goalless draw from the stands, alongside new acquisition and fellow World Cup champion Ousmane Dembele, who had finalized his move to Paris earlier that day.

“Following very constructive and positive discussions between Paris Saint-Germain and Kylian Mbappe before the PSG – Lorient game, the player has been reinstated into the first team training squad this morning,” PSG said in a statement.

Amid a summer marked by changes at Parc des Princes, including new arrivals and Lionel Messi’s departure, the ongoing Kylian Mbappe situation remains the focal point of media attention.

As the France captain, Mbappe has declined to extend his contract with PSG, which allows him to depart as a free agent next year. Throughout this period, Real Madrid has been widely regarded as his desired destination.

While under Qatari ownership, PSG’s intention is to sell Mbappe presently and secure a substantial transfer fee for the player who was acquired for 180 million euros ($198 million) from Monaco in 2017.

“The position is very clear. If Kylian wants to stay, he must sign a new contract. We can’t let the best player in the world leave for free. It’s impossible,” PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi said last month.

Kylian Mbappe has been barred from training with the first team and participated in only one out of PSG’s five warm-up matches. He was also not included in the pre-season tour to Japan and South Korea. Despite new coach Luis Enrique expressing hope for a resolution, Mbappe continues to be excluded from training with the main squad. Notably, he was also omitted from the squad that faced Lorient.

Instead of being on the field, Mbappe sat alongside his fellow 2018 World Cup winner Ousmane Dembele, who had finalized his move from Barcelona earlier in the day. During the match, new coach Luis Enrique introduced six debutants. Despite his absence from the lineup, Mbappe warmly greeted Dembele.

“Welcome home my brother, so happy to see you here, the adventure begins,” Mbappe posted on social media.

Subsequently, the two friends were seen sharing smiles together in the stands. Meanwhile, Brazilian star Neymar, whose future is also uncertain, was absent due to a “viral syndrome”. With his return to the team, Mbappe has achieved a partial victory, though it remains to be seen if this development will ultimately lead to the contract extension that the club is seeking.

PSG’s offensive shortcomings in Saturday’s match against Lorient might have prompted a reevaluation of their stance towards the club’s all-time leading scorer. As a result, the 24-year-old forward is now eligible for the upcoming match against Toulouse on August 19, despite having only participated in a single friendly game against Le Havre over the last two months.
