Man City Signs Belgian Winger Doku for £55M Contract

Manchester City has finalized the acquisition of Belgian winger Jérémy Doku on a five-year contract from the French club Rennes. The announcement was made by the Premier League champions on Thursday.
Reportedly, the European champions will need to invest £55 million for the 21-year-old Doku.

Doku is now the third addition to the summer signings of the treble-winning team. He takes the place of Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez, who left for a transfer to Saudi Pro League’s Al Ahli earlier this season. City had also secured the services of midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea and center-back Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.

Since joining Rennes from Anderlecht in 2020, Doku has netted 12 goals in 91 matches. He has represented Belgium on 14 occasions, finding the net twice. Additionally, he was included in the squad for the 2022 World Cup. As the summer transfer window has a little more than a week left, it’s improbable that City’s activity will conclude with the signing of Doku.

“This is a great day for me, both personally and professionally,” Doku said in a City statement.

“Manchester City are the best team in world football, so to be joining them is something very special for me and my family. I am a young player with so much learning and improving to do. Working with Pep (Guardiola) and his staff, and playing alongside these work-class players, will make me a much better player.”

“Watching City last season was amazing. To win the Treble is the hardest thing in football and they did it. You cannot imagine how exciting it is to be joining this team. I cannot wait to get started. Hopefully I can make the fans happy,” he added.

Manchester City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, has expressed confidence that Doku will progress into a “world-class” attacking player with the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola.

He added: “Jeremy is a very exciting young player and I’m so pleased he’s joining us. In terms of raw attributes, he has everything a winger needs. He has outstanding pace and he is exceptional in one-on-one situations. I honestly believe working with Pep and the technical staff here at City will see him develop into a world-class attacking talent.”

Defender Aymeric Laporte made a move to Al Nassr, while João Cancelo is on the verge of leaving for Barcelona. In addition, the club is in search of a substitute for midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who is sidelined until the new year due to a hamstring injury that required surgery.

Manchester City has decided to step back from pursuing a deal for West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paquetá. This decision comes as the Brazil international is currently under investigation related to betting. However, the club is keeping an eye on other potential targets.

Manchester City has received indications that Wolverhampton Wanderers might be open to considering a second offer for Matheus Nunes. However, City is prepared to abandon the deal if there’s no agreement reached regarding the valuation of the Portuguese international.

City’s initial offer of £47 million ($59 million) for Nunes was rejected on Wednesday, and it’s been reported that this offer was significantly lower than Wolves’ valuation of the midfielder.

Despite winning their first two matches of the title defense, Manchester City will have to manage without manager Pep Guardiola on the sidelines until after the September international break. This is due to Guardiola undergoing back surgery in Barcelona on Tuesday.
