Paris St Germain took a huge step towards claiming their record 11th Ligue 1 title as Kylian Mbappe’s sensational brace secured a crucial 2-1 victory against relegation-threatened AJ Auxerre on Sunday.

Mbappe is having an incredible season that impresses both fans and experts. The 24-year-old has scored 40 goals and made nine assists in 41 games in all competitions. In Ligue 1, he has been involved in 33 goals, scoring 28 and assisting in five.

In the match against Auxerre, Mbappe wasted no time in making an impact, scoring two goals within the opening eight minutes to put PSG in the driving seat.

With this victory, the Parisian giants reached an impressive 84 points, putting them six points ahead of second-placed RC Lens, who also have a significantly inferior goal difference (+50 to +34). Now, PSG only needs to avoid defeat in their upcoming clash against Racing Strasbourg to secure the championship.

Captain Marquinhos expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating, “We relaxed a little after the two goals but in the end, we have one hand on the trophy. We’ve done a lot this season, and dropping points would have complicated things. We’re not going to celebrate the title tonight, but we will celebrate the win.”

Match Highlights

Mbappe’s first goal came in the sixth minute, as he unleashed a powerful right-footed strike into the top corner of the net. He swiftly followed it up two minutes later with a magnificent 20-meter shot after an assist from Lionel Messi. This impressive display elevated Mbappe to the top of the Ligue 1 scoring chart, with an impressive 28 goals this season, two more than Olympique Lyonnais forward Alexandre Lacazette.

However, AJ Auxerre did not make things easy for PSG. Rayan Raveloson came close to equalizing with a half-volley that rattled against the crossbar, while Gianluigi Donnarumma made a brilliant save just before halftime, denying Nuno Da Costa a chance to level the score.

Auxerre managed to reduce the deficit in the 51st minute when Lassine Sinayoko found the back of the net with a low-angled shot, securing his first-ever Ligue 1 goal. PSG struggled in midfield, and it was only thanks to Donnarumma’s heroics in goal that they avoided conceding an equalizer.

Meanwhile, RC Lens overcame a shaky start to defeat Lorient 3-1, extending their lead over third-placed Olympique de Marseille by five points. This victory puts Lens in a favorable position for automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage. Florian Sotoca, Adrien Thomasson, and Seko Fofana were the goal-scoring heroes for Lens, responding to Romain Faivre’s opener for Lorient.

In other notable matches, Stade Rennais secured an emphatic 5-0 victory over already-relegated AC Ajaccio, who will face RC Lens in their next match. Stade Rennais sits three points behind fourth-placed Monaco and just one point adrift of fifth-placed Lille. Monaco suffered a 3-1 defeat against Lyon on Friday.

Stade Brestois also celebrated a crucial 2-1 home victory against Clermont, ensuring their safety from relegation.

With two games remaining, the Ligue 1 title race is entering its final stages. Paris St Germain’s dominant performance against AJ Auxerre has put them on the cusp of glory, but they must maintain focus to secure the championship and etch their names in the history books once again.
