MS Dhoni Nurses Knee Injury But May Still Play

MS Dhoni, captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), played with a knee injury in the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday. Despite his limited movement, he managed to score a 17-ball 32, coming close to winning the game for his team.

A video has surfaced on social media that shows Dhoni limping on his way back to the dressing room after the match. Fans expressed concern for the cricketing legend but also praised his warrior spirit.

In the post-match press conference, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that Dhoni is indeed nursing a knee injury that was hindering his movements. However, he expressed confidence in Dhoni’s ability to manage the injury and continue leading the team. Fleming also spoke highly of Dhoni’s fitness regimen and professional approach to the game.

Other Injured Players

On the other hand, South Africa fast bowler Sisanda Magala bowled only two overs against Rajasthan Royals before leaving the field with a split webbing. He is set to be out for at least two weeks.

This is a significant blow to Super Kings’ chances, especially away from home, because his yorkers and slower variations offer a potent point of difference. Super Kings are already without left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary, who will also miss the entire IPL season.

The only other specialist overseas seamer in Super Kings’ squad is Matheesha Pathirana, who arrived in Chennai from New Zealand on Monday night, but he has just recovered from Covid-19.

Additionally, Theekshana is still finding his feet. CSK had also lost Deepak Chahar to a hamstring injury in the opening game against Mumbai Indians. Chahar is two to three weeks away from a return, while seamer Simarjeet Singh is still recovering from a long-term injury.

Of course, injuries aren’t the only issue plaguing CSK. England all-rounder Ben Stokes was also forced to miss the game due to a heel injury, while pacer Deepak Chahar is almost certainly out of IPL 2023 due to a hamstring injury sustained during the match against Mumbai Indians. It seems like the team just can’t catch a break.

Despite the injuries, Fleming praised Dhoni’s commitment to keeping himself match-fit and preparing in advance. He almost pulled off a thrilling win for CSK, along with Ravindra Jadeja, but RR’s Sandeep Sharma nailed three consecutive yorker-length deliveries to prevent a win.

CSK’s Status

CSK has been hit hard with injuries, with Magala and Deepak Chahar unable to bowl in crucial moments. Their star signing, Ben Stokes, is being monitored on a day-to-day basis, while Simarjeet Singh and Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana are also recovering from injuries.

CSK, which endured its second defeat in four games, will meet RCB in Bengaluru on Monday. Fleming emphasized the need to find solutions despite the injuries, saying, “It’s not ideal, but the captain has to then think on his feet.”

Despite all these challenges, Fleming and the rest of the CSK team aren’t giving up. They know that T20 cricket is unpredictable and that anything can happen on the field. And while they may have lost the game against the Royals by just three runs, they’re not letting that get them down.
