After a long wait, Mohit Sharma finally got a chance to play in the Indian Premier League again, and he made the most of it. The 34-year-old pacer won the Player of the Match award on his debut for the Gujarat Titans on Thursday, April 13, against Punjab Kings.

Mohit had been out of competitive cricket for a while due to an injury in 2020. But he was given a chance to be a net bowler for Gujarat Titans last year. This was a significant step down for the former India player, who had also won the Orange Cap in 2014 and played for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. However, Mohit saw this as an opportunity to keep himself fit and in the game.

He impressed the Titans’ coaching staff, and this year he was given a contract worth Rs 50 lakh. Mohit was the last bowler to be introduced into the attack by Gujarat Titans, but he made an impact right away. He took two wickets in his four-over spell and finished with an economy rate of 4.5 runs per over.

Mohit’s Debut Performance

During the match, Mohit varied his lengths and mixed his pace well, conceding just six runs in the 19th over while claiming the crucial wicket of Sam Curran. He got Jitesh Sharma caught behind in his second over and remained economical in his third over by conceding just three singles.

His wickets were crucial in restricting Punjab Kings to a below-par total of 153 runs in 20 overs. The Titans’ batsmen chased the target down comfortably with six wickets in hand, thanks to a half-century by Shubman Gill.

In addition, Mohit used bouncers and yorkers cleverly, which made it difficult for the batters to predict his deliveries. He bowled 12 balls that resulted in no runs out of the 56 balls bowled by the Titans in their innings.

As a bowler, Mohit is skilled at creating unpredictable deliveries that are difficult for the batsman to hit. He often bowls a length that is too short to drive on the up but not short enough to pull, and he can vary his pace and use different techniques, such as bowling with the seam upright or scrambled, or using an off-cutter or a delivery out of the back of his hand.

After the Match

Following the match, Titans captain Hardik Pandya expressed that he was very impressed with Mohit’s performance and praised his hard work and patience.

Mohit credited his success to the role clarity that Ashish Nehra has instilled in the Gujarat Titans dressing room. According to Mohit, Nehra has made sure that every player understands their role in the team, which has been a key factor in the team’s success so far.

Mohit’s impressive comeback will be a boost for the defending champions, Gujarat Titans, as they look to retain their title this season. His experience and skill will be crucial in their campaign, and fans will be eagerly watching him in action in the upcoming matches.

Following their 6-wicket win against the Punjab Kings, the Gujarat Titans will play against Rajasthan Royals on April 16.
