Pakistan Defeats Sri Lanka in the First Test
Pakistan’s top batsman, Imam-ul-Haq, showed incredible calmness and talent as he led Pakistan to victory and defeated Sri Lanka in the first Test. Sri Lanka had set a tough target of 131 runs for Pakistan to win, but Imam’s unbeaten fifty was crucial in helping his team achieve a hard-earned win.
Starting the day with a score of 48/3, the Pakistan team faced a formidable challenge as they needed to navigate their way through Sri Lanka’s bowling attack to achieve the target. The early loss of three wickets, including the skipper Babar Azam, who scored a promising 24 off Prabath Jayasuriya’s delivery, put the visitors under pressure. However, Imam-ul-Haq, who had been in the crease overnight on 25 runs, showed his mettle by forming crucial partnerships with Babar and the left-handed Saud Shakeel.
Babar Azam, one of Pakistan’s batting mainstays, came out all guns blazing and immediately signaled his intent by dispatching the first ball of the day to the boundary. His elegant strokeplay and fluent batting raised hopes of a comfortable chase, but Jayasuriya had other plans. The left-arm spinner bowled a perfectly aimed delivery that caught Babar Azam in front of the wickets, resulting in an lbw dismissal. Despite his departure, the captain had made a valuable contribution to the team’s efforts to win the match.
Shakeel, fresh off his remarkable unbeaten double century of 208 in Pakistan’s first innings, displayed his aggressive intent once again, taking on the bowlers with confidence. However, his impressive stint was cut short as off-spinner Ramesh Mendis managed to find an edge, resulting in a catch behind the wickets. Nonetheless, Shakeel’s presence had bolstered Pakistan’s position in the match, providing them with a significant lead of 149 runs in the rain-affected game.
As the chase progressed, Imam-ul-Haq continued to exhibit great resilience and determination. He reached his eighth Test fifty with finesse, adding stability to the Pakistan innings. Jayasuriya, who had been the pick of the bowlers with four crucial wickets, managed to dismiss Imam as well, offering a glimmer of hope to the hosts. But Agha Salman rose to the occasion and joined Imam-ul-Haq at the batting crease. Together, they increased the run rate and sealed the victory with a powerful six.
The match had earlier seen some outstanding performances from both sides. In Sri Lanka’s first innings, Dhananjaya de Silva’s gritty knock of 122 was the highlight, helping the hosts post a total of 312 runs. However, Pakistan’s spin duo of Noman Ali and Abrar Ahmed showcased their skills, taking three wickets each to bowl out Sri Lanka for 279 runs in the second innings, setting the stage for Pakistan’s successful chase.
Notably, Pakistan’s pace spearhead, Shaheen Shah Afridi, made a memorable comeback to Test cricket after a year-long absence due to a knee injury. Afridi bagged five wickets in the match, reminding everyone of his prowess with the ball and how crucial he is for Pakistan’s bowling attack.
With this thrilling win, Pakistan has gained a significant advantage in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The focus now shifts to the second match, scheduled to commence in Colombo on Monday.
