Pakistani cricketer’s pension suspension ends
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reinstated the pension of former Test pace bowler Sarfaraz Nawaz after his suspension in January 2017. This suspension came after Nawaz made unsubstantiated defamatory statements against former Chairman Najam Sethi.
The ex gratia payments were stopped because Nawaz broke the Code of Conduct under the Players’ Welfare Policy, which led to disciplinary actions from previous PCB administrations. Nawaz, who faced health issues in London last year, also finds walking difficult due to bone disease.
He held a meeting with PCB chief Zaka Ashraf in Lahore. Ashraf, who also leads the PCB’s Cricket Management Committee, aimed to resolve the suspended ex gratia payments during this meeting. A cheque was presented to Nawaz by Ashraf to settle the outstanding payments. This payment was made following the PCB’s Players’ Welfare Policy, with the PCB Chief assuring unwavering support for former players.
Ashraf expressed his decision to meet with Nawaz due to his concern that a former Test cricketer was deprived of his pension while in a challenging situation. He emphasized the need for all cricketers, past and present, national or domestic, to receive the board’s respect and care throughout their lives.

No cricketer should have to go through what Nawaz had to face, and I want to reassure every former and current cricketer, international or domestic, that the PCB considers them as its asset and will look after them at every stage of their life and in every possible way. They deserve to be loved and respected by their cricket board.
