Dambulla Aura scored a nine-run victory over defending champions Jaffna Kings in the 11th match of the 2023 Lanka Premier League (LPL). The game took place at Pallekele International Stadium under floodlights on Monday.

This win was particularly satisfying for Dambulla Aura as they had lost to Jaffna Kings by 21 runs in their previous encounter at R. Premadasa Stadium last week. With this victory, Dambulla Aura secured their third win in the tournament.

Jaffna Kings faced a challenging task while chasing a target of 135 runs. They struggled against the trio of fast bowlers – Hasan Ali, Binura Fernando, and Hayden Kerr. These bowlers joined forces effectively and managed to dismiss four of Jaffna Kings’ batsmen for just 27 runs in the seventh over. As a result, Jaffna Kings were limited to a total score of 125 runs.

Despite some resistance from Shoaib Malik and Dunith Wellalage, who put up a partnership of 39 runs for the fifth wicket, Jaffna Kings struggled to maintain momentum. Malik, who remained unbeaten at 74 runs off 53 balls, fought valiantly. However, the team found itself unable to reach the target of 135 runs and suffered their third defeat of the tournament.

A Showcase of Talent: Rohit’s Standout Performances

Dambulla Aura faced a challenging start when their openers Avishka Fernando and skipper Kusal Mendis were dismissed for ducks in the very first over. Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kusal Perera managed to stabilize the innings with a partnership of 51 runs for the third wicket. However, the team faced setbacks once again, losing three quick wickets and slipping from 52 for 3 to 85 for 6 in the 15th over. Kusal Perera was the top scorer with 41 runs, while Hayden Kerr contributed an unbeaten 25 runs. Dambulla Aura concluded their innings with a score of 134 for 8.

Hasan Ali’s exceptional bowling performance was crucial in thwarting Shoaib Malik’s efforts. He took two important wickets while conceding only 13 runs in four overs, earning him the Player of the Game award.

Jaffna Kings’ Towhid Hridoy, who had been making impactful contributions, faced disappointment as he was dismissed for a golden duck while chasing Dambulla’s total of 134. Dambulla had scored 134 runs, and when Jaffna Kings were trying to chase that score, Hridoy, who came to bat third, got out without scoring any runs. He tried to hit a ball from the bowler Binura Fernando but only managed to hit it in a way that it was caught by a fielder near the boundary.

In his earlier matches in the LPL tournament, Hridoy did well, scoring fifty runs in his first match and then getting 24, 44 not out, and 19 runs in the following matches. But in this game, he couldn’t score any runs, ending his streak of good performances. Overall, he has scored a total of 141 runs in the tournament so far.

In the end, Jaffna Kings managed to score only 125 runs in their 20 overs, falling short of their target by nine runs. This victory proved to be Dambulla Aura’s determined efforts and effective teamwork, with Hasan Ali playing a pivotal role in their success.
