With the World Cup underway, we look at 5 teams who have been labelled as favorites to win the cup. There hasn’t been a World Cup that Brazil has missed. In fact, not only are they the only team to qualify for every single World Cup but they are often one of the favorites to win it.
With a star-studded squad which includes the likes of Neymar, Vinicius JR, Casemiro, Antony and Gabriel Jesus, the Selecao will be looking to add to their 5 World Cup titles especially since they won it the last time the World Cup was played in Asia.
Argentina is another strong favorite as they come into the tournament on a 36-match unbeaten run. They are also the current COPA America champions beating Brazil 1-0 in last year’s final. Lionel Messi will be looking to secure his first World Cup and end Argentina’s 36-year trophy draught.
Another superstar that will be looking to bring glory to his country is Cristiano Ronaldo. The 37-year Portuguese will play in what will be his last World Cup and will hope to go out with a bang. Portugal’s squad also includes stars like Joao Felix, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo and Bruno Fernandes. Their best ever finish was 3rd in the 1966 World Cup.
The next team on our list is Germany. They have the most appearances in World Cup Finals, 8 in total and winning 4 of them. The squad has a good mix of experience with players like Manual Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Ilkay Guendogan alongside promising youngsters Armel Bella Kotchap, Jamal Musiala and Youssoufa Moukoko. The Germans always do well in World Cups.
Lastly but certainly not least is England. Led by captain Harry Kane, the Three Lions look to end their 56-year draught and take home the cup this year. Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden are having a great Premier League season and if that form translates to the World Cup, England could go all the way.
So will a former champion reign in Qatar or will a new winner arise? Let’s wait and see.
