Shakib Al Hasan Pulls Out of the 2023 IPL
The 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has begun with exciting action and big names taking the field. However, some players have been forced to miss the tournament due to injuries or national commitments.
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is the latest to join the list of absentees, as he has opted out of the entire season due to international commitments and personal reasons.
In December 2022, Shakib was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1.50 crore at the mini-auction held. He was recently named in the Bangladesh squad and announced for the only Test against Ireland.
Shakib’s Achievements
Shakib has played 71 matches in the IPL, scoring 793 runs at an average of 19.83 with two half-centuries to his name. He has also picked 63 wickets at an average of 29.19 and an economy of 7.44.
Shakib was a part of KKR from 2011-2017 and of their victorious campaigns in 2012 and 2014 before shifting to Sunrisers Hyderabad for 2018 and 2019. He once again returned to KKR in 2021, when they reached the final of the season after seven years.
Previous Reports
Initially, it was already known that Shakib would not be able to play for KKR in the opening stages of IPL 2023. Instead, Shakib will be participating in the one-off Test match against Ireland, followed by a three-match ODI series against them.
The ODI series against Ireland is scheduled to take place from May 9th to 14th, with a practice match on May 5th. Unfortunately for KKR, by the time Shakib returns from his national team duties, the IPL will have already concluded on May 28th.
Announcement Details
The 36-year-old has formally informed the KKR franchise about his unavailability for the entire season. Meanwhile, Litton Das, who also received a split NOC from the BCB, wants to play in the IPL and is reportedly keen on representing KKR. However, he has not received an offer from the team yet.
As a result of the player pulling out of the IPL, KKR is looking for a replacement for Shakib in their squad. If Shakib does not play, the Knights will have to opt for another foreign player to take his place. While reports suggest that Shakib has already accepted this deal, he has not made any official statement regarding the matter.
KKR’s Status and Potential Replacements
KKR, who are already without regular captain Shreyas Iyer, will have to face a strong Royal Challengers Bangalore in their next game at their home ground, Eden Gardens, on April 6.
While Shakib’s absence is a blow, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the Knight Riders, as they now have the option of signing a death-overs specialist or a genuine all-rounder to strengthen their squad.
Some players they could look at include Australian fast bowler Riley Meredith, Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka, and upcoming Australian seamer Lance Morris. These players have shown potential in their respective leagues and could provide the necessary depth to the KKR setup.
Aside from this, the team has a strong overseas contingent of players, including David Wiese, Lockie Ferguson, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Tim Southee.
