Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, believes that the team’s recent T20 series win against Afghanistan will have a positive impact on their confidence as they prepare for the upcoming Asia Cup. Although Bangladesh lost the ODI series against Afghanistan 2-1, they showed great resilience in the T20 format and managed to win the two-match series with a 2-0 whitewash at the Sylhet International Stadium.

The triumph in the T20 series against Afghanistan is considered a significant achievement for Bangladesh, providing a much-needed morale boost for the team. Shakib and his players aim to capitalize on this success and carry the momentum into the forthcoming Asia Cup tournament.

“From the T20 squad, around 80 to 90 percent of cricketers will play in the ODIs and this is a huge confidence boost for us ahead of the Asia Cup,” Shakib said after his team’s win.

Shakib acknowledges the team’s strong performance in T20Is but also emphasizes the importance of flexibility to achieve more victories in the future. In the rain-affected second game of the series, Bangladesh made a strategic decision by promoting Afif Hossain, who usually bats at number seven, up the batting order. This move proved successful as Afif played remarkably well, scoring 67 runs in a partnership with Litton Das, which set the stage for a significant victory. It is worth noting that Afghanistan had a formidable bowling attack, making Bangladesh’s achievement even more commendable.

Additionally, Bangladesh has been enjoying a successful streak in bilateral T20I series. They secured their fourth consecutive bilateral series win in this format. In the previous year, they won a 2-0 series against the United Arab Emirates in Dubai. This year, they continued their winning form by defeating England and Ireland by margins of 3-0 and 2-1 respectively on their home ground. These accomplishments highlight Bangladesh’s progress and growth in T20I cricket.

Shakib emphasizes the importance of flexibility in T20 matches, as players may be required to adapt to different situations. In this format, a player batting at number seven may need to fulfill the same role as an opener, even if they have to bat for only five overs. Shakib believes that if every player can bat in various positions, they will find it easier to adapt when facing challenging situations. The same principle applies to bowlers, as they need to adjust their approach based on the game’s circumstances.

Shakib also mentions the healthy competition between pacers and spinners in the team. With the current combination they have, the players are pushing each other to perform better, which ultimately benefits the team as a whole.

While reflecting on the team’s composition, Shakib mentions that most of the players in the current squad have been with the team since the last World Cup or Asia Cup. Although there have been a few changes with two to four players coming and going, it is a continuous process of building the best combination. Shakib admits that they are still some way off from finding their optimal lineup.

Beating Afghanistan in T20Is has provided Bangladesh with a sense of relief since historically they haven’t fared well against them in this format. Shakib expresses his satisfaction when the team’s plans work effectively and players execute them on the field, leading to favorable results. The series win under challenging conditions has boosted the team’s confidence, and Shakib believes it will motivate them to perform well in the upcoming matches.
