Sunrisers Hyderabad’s star all-rounder, Washington Sundar, has unfortunately been ruled out for the remainder of the IPL 2023 season due to a hamstring injury. The injury seems to have occurred during training ahead of their match against Delhi Capitals.

This news comes as a blow to the SRH team, who will now have to look for a replacement for the versatile player.

Sundar had been performing well this season, scoring 60 runs in seven matches while batting in the lower-middle order. He also picked up three wickets in one match, against the Delhi Capitals. However, injuries have consistently plagued Sundar’s career, with the hamstring strain being the latest in a series of fitness concerns and illnesses.

Sundar’s Past Injuries

In 2021, he was ruled out of the tournament’s UAE leg due to a finger injury after taking three wickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first half of the season. Unfortunately, his misfortune continued when he tested positive for Covid-19, which forced him to miss the ODI leg of India’s tour of South Africa in January 2022. Washington’s hamstring injury also prevented him from participating in the three-match T20I series at home against West Indies.

During IPL 2022, Washington, who had been signed by the Sunrisers, missed four games due to a split webbing in his bowling hand. In August of last year, while fielding for Lancashire during a county stint, he injured his left shoulder, and as a result, he was ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.

Sundar’s IPL Record

This year, Sundar represented the Indian team in ODIs and T20Is against Sri Lanka and New Zealand respectively and was also part of the squad for the three-match series against Australia. However, he didn’t make it into the playing XI. Just as Sundar had begun a consistent run without injuries, the hamstring strain struck the all-rounder again.

In the IPL 2022 mega auction, Sundar was bought by the SRH for INR 8.75 crore, and Lucknow Super Giants were the other franchise bidding for his signature. In the last year’s edition, Sundar played 9 matches, scoring 101 runs at a strike rate of 146.38, and picked up six wickets at an economy rate of 8.54.

SRH Status

In their latest match, Sunrisers Hyderabad to Delhi Capitals by seven runs, despite Washington Sundar’s all-round performance. Sundar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar restricted Delhi to 144/9, but SRH struggled to chase the target, managing only 137/6. Heinrich Klaasen and Sundar’s partnership of 41 runs for the sixth wicket came too late for SRH, with Delhi’s Mukesh Kumar bowling a terrific last over to secure the win.

Mayank Agarwal made 49 from 39 balls for SRH but failed to make the most of two lifelines. DC’s Axar Patel and Manish Pandey scored 34 each to take the team past the 100-run mark.

The SRH team has not yet announced a replacement for Sundar. However, the teams have their prominent players fully fit, though they are still languishing at the bottom half of the points table, with just two wins in their last five games. The franchise will play its next game against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 29, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
