Tamim Iqbal, the captain of Bangladesh’s One Day International (ODI) cricket team, has issued a challenge to his players, declaring that there are still spots up for grabs in the squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which is set to take place later this year in India.

Bangladesh has already qualified for the 50-over showcase, and they will be using the upcoming series against Ireland and Afghanistan to prepare for the tournament. Their first assignment will be three ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches against Ireland this week, and they will be without several key players for these games.

Pacer Taskin Ahmed is sidelined due to injury, and experienced batter Mahmud Ullah is being rested. This presents an opportunity for many fringe players to stake their claim for a spot in the World Cup squad, and Tamim knows that competition for places is healthy among his squad.

“There are no particular spots that, I can guarantee, are already fixed,” Tamim boldly declared. “We will play this series and then the next one in different conditions, and the best possible team will go (to the World Cup).”

Tamim’s Statements

Tamim is aware that the upcoming series against Ireland will be a tough challenge for his side, but he remains confident that his team can perform well and secure victory. “They are a good team in these conditions, and they are quite familiar with the conditions,” he noted. “We hope that it will be a good and competitive series.”

Bangladesh’s form during the Super League has been impressive, with the team sitting fourth in the standings thanks to 13 victories from the 21 ODI matches they have contested. Now, they will be tested in Irish conditions.

A clean sweep over Ireland in the upcoming series could see them rise above England and India and finish as high as second in the standings.

Tamim is pleased with the performances of some of the fringe players who have been given a chance to impress in recent matches. “For now, whoever has gotten the opportunity has done well, for instance, Towhid Hridoy,” he said. “It’s too early to comment, but the one series he played in, he has done exceptionally well.”

The Current Bangladesh Squad

In the post match interviews, Andre Russell, a proven match-winner for KKR, praised Rinku for taking the pressure off him. Nitish Rana, the team captain, lauded Rinku for his hard work and self-belief. The entire Eden Gardens crowd cheered for Rinku during his innings, a sign of the respect he has earned this season. With Rinku and Russell in fine form, KKR is well-placed to make a deep run in the playoffs.

In conclusion, the KKR spinners were successful in tying down the PBKS on a slow pitch, and their batters hung on by the skin of their teeth, both in the match against PBKS and in the tournament. The result left both teams level at 10 points from 11 matches, with five teams currently tied on that points total in the middle of the table.
