Tamim, Mahmudullah Return for New Zealand ODI Series
Veteran pair Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah have been included in the 15-player Bangladesh squad for the first two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) of the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand.
The former Bangladesh captain, Tamim, managed to recuperate from his back injury and earned a spot in the team for the World Cup. This decision came after he reversed his earlier choice to retire from international cricket in July.
Mahmudullah, the right-handed player, was excluded from the team after the ODIs against England at home in March due to subpar performances. With his exclusion from the Asia Cup squad, questions arose about whether the 37-year-old, who has already retired from Tests and T20Is, had already participated in his final match for Bangladesh.
In the meantime, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has chosen to give their usual captain, Shakib Al Hasan, a break for the series. In his absence, Litton Das will assume the role of captain and lead the team against New Zealand.
Shakib is not the sole player being rested with an eye on the World Cup. Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, and Shoriful Islam, who were all part of the recent Asia Cup squad, have also been given a break. Additionally, Najmul Hossain Shanto, who is still recuperating from a hamstring injury, was not included in the squad as the team management is hesitant to take any risks with him ahead of the World Cup.

A Showcase of Talent: Rohit’s Standout Performances
“The decision to rest players was taken in consideration of the World Cup in India which will be a long tournament where ensuring the mental and physical fitness of the cricketers will be very important. The series against New Zealand provides us an opportunity to take a look at some other players as well ahead of this major event,” chief selector Mihanjul Abedin said.
On the other hand, Mohammad Naim, Afif Hossain, and Shamim Hossain, who were part of the Asia Cup squad, have been omitted from the lineup for the series against New Zealand. In contrast, Soumya Sarkar and Nurul Hasan Sohan have made a comeback to the team.
Furthermore, the selectors have introduced three newcomers to the squad, including Zakir Hasan, Syed Khaled Ahmed, and Rishad Hossain, all of whom are yet to make their international debuts.
“The squad is a blend of experience and youth and only Zakir, Khaled and Rishad have not featured in ODIs yet. Zakir was very close to playing against Ireland in March before he suffered an unfortunate injury. Khaled has done well in his list A career and Rishad offers a different dimension to our bowling attack,” Minhajul added.
Bangladesh is set to commence their training on September 19 in preparation for the series. The matches are slated for September 21, 23, and 26 and will take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
Squad (for 1st & 2nd ODIs): Liton Das (captain), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Anamul Haque, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Nurul Hasan, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Zakir Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Syed Khaled Ahmed.
