Sunrisers Hyderabad announced on Monday that Daniel Vettori, a former captain of New Zealand’s cricket team, is now their new head coach of the Indian Premier League. He is taking over the coaching position from the West Indies batting legend Brian Lara.

This will be Daniel Vettori’s second time coaching in the IPL. Before this, he was the coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2018. Vettori, who played in 113 Test matches, 295 one-day matches, and 34 Twenty20 matches for New Zealand, had previously coached the Bangalore team in the IPL. He also worked as a coach for the men’s cricket teams of Australia and Bangladesh.

The ex-captain of New Zealand’s cricket team has served as a bowling advisor for Bangladesh. Vettori has also been involved with Australia’s national team since May 2022.

Vettori is currently the assistant coach of the Australian cricket team. In the past, he has been the head coach for teams like the Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League (BBL), and Middlesex in the Vitality Blast.

“Kiwi legend Daniel Vettori joins #OrangeArmy as Head Coach,” said Sunrisers on their Twitter handle.

Vettori, known for his skills as a left-arm spinner, is currently coaching Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred tournament. Back when he coached RCB, Vettori led them to the IPL playoffs in 2015 and the final in 2016.

Brian Lara, who had been with Hyderabad for two years, ended his association with the team. This decision came after the team, which had previously won the championship in 2016, finished at the bottom of the table in this year’s T20 tournament.

“As our two-year association with Lara came to an end, we bid adieu to him,” SRH announced as they confirmed their parting with Lara.

“Thank you for your contribution to the Sunrisers. We wish you all the best for your future endeavors.”

Lara had taken over as the head coach from Tom Moody before the IPL 2023. He initially joined SRH as the batting coach during the IPL 2022.

Lara’s time as the head coach for Sunrisers was challenging, with the team finishing in 10th place in the IPL 2023. Their most recent appearance in the play-offs was in 2020. Before Lara, Moody was the head coach in IPL 2019, followed by Trevor Bayliss for the IPL 2020 and 2021 seasons.

With the latest announcement, Sunrisers Hyderabad continues its trend of frequently changing head coaches. Daniel Vettori is now the fifth head coach in the last six seasons. The former Australian cricketer, Tom Moody, returned for another stint in IPL 2022 but was replaced by Lara after a year.

Vettori now becomes the fourth head coach chosen by Sunrisers Hyderabad within six seasons, following Moody (in 2019 and 2022), Trevor Bayliss (in 2020 and 2021), and Lara (in 2023). Despite being previous champions of the IPL, SRH’s most recent playoff appearance was in 2020. During the last IPL season, SRH managed to secure just four victories.
