Last Time Omar Was Called for a Team

The last time Omar had been hired for a cricket team was in November 2022. During Brendon McCullum’s early tenure as head coach of the England Test side, the team had been experiencing a reduction in support staff. However, for their upcoming tour of Pakistan, a new addition was made to the team – a chef. The decision to appoint a chef was made after receiving feedback from players and support staff regarding the quality of food during the limited-overs series in Pakistan. Some individuals had experienced upset stomachs due to the food provided at match venues.

Although the issues encountered were not severe, with no prolonged illnesses reported and England winning the series 4-3, the demanding nature of Test matches, especially the back-to-back matches across multiple locations, necessitated better food management. Cricket Australia had regretted not having a chef during their successful tour of Pakistan earlier in the year. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to address this concern by hiring Omar Meziane, who had previously worked as a chef for the England men’s football team during the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

While this may have been the first time the ECB employed a chef specifically for a tour, they had prior experience in managing food away from home. In preparation for the ill-fated 2013-14 Ashes series, the Sydney Morning Herald obtained a document titled “Test catering requirements” that outlined the specific food needs for hosting venues.

By adding a chef to their support staff for the Pakistan tour, England aimed to ensure better food quality, tailored menus, and individualized requirements for the players throughout the Test series.

Omar’s History with Sports

Meziane’s journey in the culinary world and sports industry has been nothing short of impressive. Starting as a chef at London’s prestigious Oxo Tower in the mid-90s, he quickly gained recognition for his talent and passion for food. However, his career took an unexpected turn when he joined his boyhood club, Wycombe Wanderers, and delved into the world of sports. For the past 15-plus years, Meziane has left his mark in various sporting organizations, working with renowned teams like Wasps and Harlequins.

His expertise even extended beyond the realm of cooking, as he co-authored a book with former England rugby star James Haskell. Additionally, Meziane’s culinary skills played a vital role in fueling British Rowing’s Rio 2016 Olympic campaign and designing menus for the England cricket team’s 2013 Ashes tour.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted Meziane’s work in 2020, leaving him uncertain about the future. However, rather than succumbing to the challenges, he saw an opportunity to adapt and innovate. Realizing that professional athletes still required his services, Meziane came up with a brilliant idea: to deliver his delectable cuisine directly to them. Determined to overcome the obstacles, he decided to put food into boxes and send them to his clients. This concept of providing personalized, high-quality meals to athletes not only allowed him to continue his work but also opened up a new avenue for his business.

With his extensive experience and unwavering determination, Meziane embarked on this new venture, catering to private clients that included Chelsea footballers and racing drivers, some of whom competed in Formula 1. His ability to adapt and think outside the box has not only showcased his culinary talent but also exemplified his entrepreneurial spirit.
