VVS Laxman: Coach for Indian Team at Asian Games
Former India batsman, Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman has been appointed as the coach for the Indian team participating in the Asian Games. He is currently serving as the National Cricket Academy chief, and the decision was made due to a clash in the schedule with the 50-over World Cup, hosted in India during the same period.
To accommodate Laxman’s responsibilities, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has assembled a B team for the Asian Games, with Rituraj Gaikwad leading as the captain. In addition to his role at the Asian Games, Laxman will also step in as the coach for the three-match T20 series against Ireland next month.
This decision comes as Rahul Dravid, the current coach, will be given a break following the ongoing series against the West Indies. Similarly, the support staff, including batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip, will also be granted a breather after the West Indies series, ahead of the Asia Cup.
The reasoning behind Laxman’s involvement with the Ireland series is that the team for this particular tour is expected to consist of second-string players. Therefore, the BCCI officials deemed it appropriate for Laxman to accompany the team as the coach. Laxman will continue in his role as the coach for the Asian Games team.
Laxman has previously acted as the head coach of the Indian team, assuming the role following India’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup last year, during the series against New Zealand. With VVS Laxman taking charge as the coach for the Indian team at the Asian Games, excitement and anticipation soar for the cricketing community. Laxman’s vast experience as a former India batsman and his leadership skills make him a valuable asset in guiding the team towards success.
As the Asian Games approach, all eyes will be on Laxman and the Indian team as they strive to showcase their talent, determination, and unity on the cricket field. The stage is set for a captivating display of cricketing prowess, and fans eagerly await the outcome of this prestigious tournament under Laxman’s guidance. The national selection committee is yet to finalize the team for the upcoming Ireland series. Once the team is selected, Laxman will take charge as the coach to guide and mentor the players.
History of Cricket at the Asian Games
Cricket’s history at the Asian Games began in the 2010 Asian Games, held in Guangzhou, China. The inclusion of cricket in the event was a significant step towards the promoting of the sport within Asia. Since its debut, it has witnessed some intense battles from powerhouses such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Over the years, the Asian Games cricket tournament has been key in nurturing the young talents and provides emerging players a platform to gain valuable experience. The 2023 Asian Games will be the third time that cricket will be a medal sport at the Asian Games. The Indian cricket team has faced a series of setbacks and struggles in previous Asian Games, failing to secure a victory. However, with the appointment of a new coach, there is a renewed sense of hope and optimism within the team and among the fans.
A new coach can bring innovative strategies, improved communication, and a revitalized approach to training and preparation. The introduction of fresh ideas and a different coaching style can help the players overcome their recent struggles and regain their winning form.
