Who is Nigar Sultana?

The Bangladesh Women’s National Cricket Team is formidable in its own right and has recently been on the rise. Many players on the team stand out in different ways, and one of them is Nigar Sultana. Nigar Sultana has plenty of achievements in her career, but what is the story behind this female cricketer?

Nigar Sultana is the captain of the Bangladesh women’s national cricket team in the WODI and the WT20I formats. Not much has been revealed about her personal life and what she did before becoming a professional cricketer, but there is plenty to say about her career. 

Debut and Style 

Nigar Sultana made her debut as a teenager in the Bangladesh Women tour of Pakistan in 2015. Following this debut, she made rapid strides and became a regular in the Bangladesh white-ball squads. In the course of her career, she also became known as an extremely competent keeper with a batting style that’s on the less aggressive side. Because of this, she has been deemed more than reliable when it comes to handling tough conditions and tricky bowling attacks.

 

Career

In June 2018, Sultana was part of Bangladesh’s squad that won their first-ever Women’s Asia Cup title, winning the 2018 Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup tournament. Shortly after, she was selected for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier tournament as part of the Bangladesh team. The same year, she was named in Bangladesh’s squad for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament in the West Indies. 

In August 2019, Sultana was part of Bangladesh’s squad for the 2019 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier tournament in Scotland. Two months later, she was named to the Women’s Global Development Squad, ahead of a five-match series in Australia. She was also a part of the Bangladesh squad for the 2019 South Asian Games, which they won by two runs against Sri Lanka in the finals.

The following year, she was named in Bangladesh’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. During that tournament, she was the leading run-scorer for Bangladesh, with 114 runs in four matches.

Captaincy

In November 2021, Sultana was named the captain of Bangladesh’s team for the 2021 Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament in Zimbabwe. Sultana was again named captain of the Bangladesh team for the 2022 Commonwealth Games Cricket Qualifier tournament in Malaysia. Following the tournament, she was the captain of Bangladesh’s team for the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand. Recently, Sultana was named the Bangladesh squad captain for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

Achievements

Sultana achieved the Highest partnership for the 3rd wicket in 2016 with 236 runs against the Maldives Women. She scored the fourth-highest number of runs in innings with 113 runs while playing as the third batter. In the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, she and Bangladesh caused an upset by defeating Australia Women’s National Under-19 cricket team for the first time.
