Taskin Ahmed to Miss Bangladesh’s Super League ODI
Taskin Ahmed, a key player in Bangladesh’s cricket team, has been ruled out of the Super League ODI series against Ireland in May due to a side strain injury. This comes as a blow to his preparation for the Cricket World Cup 2023.
The 14-member team will play three matches in Chelmsford from May 9, and the squad will also include left-arm spinner Taijul Islam as a replacement for Nasum Ahmed.
The last time Ahmed was ruled out of an ODI due to an injury was back in December. At the time, he had sustained a back injury.
According to reports, left-armer Mrittunjoy Chowdhury has been chosen as Taskin’s replacement.
Chowdhury’s Selection
Mrittunjoy has earned his spot with some impressive performances in Bangladesh’s domestic tournaments. In the current List A competition at home, he has claimed 12 wickets in eight games, following up from 17 scalps in the previous season.
He has also delivered a good performance in the last two editions of the Bangladesh Premier League, taking a total of 23 wickets. Although not a regular member of the Bangladesh national team, Mrittunjoy has frequently bowled in the team’s nets during the domestic season.
This change, however, is the only one in the squad that defeated Ireland 2-0 in the previous ODI series. The core of the team, including Tamim Iqbal as the captain, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Litton Das, remains the same.
Towhid Hridoy, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Yasir Ali, and Rony Talukdar will also be part of the team. Mahmudullah, who was rested for the previous Ireland ODIs, remains out of the squad.
Bangladesh’s Last Match
Before their recent announcements, Bangladesh claimed a seven-wicket victory over Ireland in their one-off Test on Friday. Mushfiqur Rahim led Bangladesh to the win with an unbeaten 51, supported by Mominul Hague’s 20 not out. Ireland scored 214 and 292 in their innings, while Bangladesh scored 369 and 138-3.
Despite Andy McBrine’s impressive 6-118 in the first innings, Bangladesh dominated the match, with Rahim scoring 126 and Taijul Islam taking 4-90 and 5-58 in each inning.
Lorcan Tucker hit a century for Ireland, but they were unable to prevent Bangladesh from securing victory just after lunch on the fourth day.
Following the team’s latest victory, the Bangladesh team is currently ranked fourth on the Super League points table, making them automatic participants in the World Cup later this year.
While the series is an opportunity for Bangladesh to fine-tune ahead of the Cricket World Cup, Ireland needs to win all three matches to keep automatic qualification for India 2023 alive. If they win, they will be level with South Africa, currently positioned in the last automatic qualification spot.
However, they will also need to improve their net run rate from -0.382 to -0.076 or better to overtake the Proteas. Teams finishing in 9th to 13th at the end of the Super League move to the ten-team Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, beginning on 18 June.
The series promises to be an exciting one, with Ireland giving them all to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
