Rishabh Pant, the talented Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, has been out of action for quite some time now, and it looks like he will remain out of action for a considerable period of time. Unfortunately, Pant sustained multiple injuries in a car accident on December 30, 2022, which has kept him away from the game.

Pant’s last appearance for Team India was a week before the accident when he played a crucial role in India’s whitewash of Bangladesh and helped them reach the WTC final. His absence is likely to mean that KL Rahul will be India’s designated wicketkeeper at the World Cup, while Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson could also make the squad.

He has been making progress in his recovery, but the severity of his injuries means that it will take at least eight to nine months for him to be fully match-fit. Moreover, it is expected to take him further time to feature as a wicketkeeper. So, until he is fit to don the wicketkeeping gloves like before, he will feature as a pure batter.

What Will Happen to Pant?

The timeline of his recovery effectively rules him out of Team India’s two biggest upcoming white-ball assignments, the Asia Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup, which are slated to take place in a few months’ time. Pant has already been ruled out of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, with KS Bharat taking up the wicketkeeping duties in his absence.

Despite undergoing multiple surgeries to treat the injuries, Pant is expected to go under the knife once more, seemingly for the final time. He is currently under the treatment of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, head of the Centre for Sports Medicine, and director of Arthroscopy & Shoulder Service.

Other Reports on Pant

Sources say that once Pant has undergone his surgeries, he will head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for rehabilitation to regain his form and work on his fitness.

According to reports, Pant is recovering faster than expected, and the initial comeback period will focus solely on his batting skills. Pant is still considered an asset as a batter, and his presence in the team could provide a much-needed boost to India’s middle order.

Before the latest update, Pant recently reported to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore for the next stage of his recovery. He was also seen during the Delhi Capitals’ (DC) first home match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, where he was walking with the help of crutches and seen in the stands with BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

David Warner, who has taken over as the captain of the Delhi Capitals in Pant’s absence, had advised the young cricketer to take it slow and focus on his recovery.

It is clear that Pant has a long road ahead of him, but with his talent and determination, there is no doubt that he will be back on the field sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Indian cricket fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on his progress and looking forward to seeing him back in action as soon as possible.
