Bangladesh women finally got a win against India in the 3rd T20I in a thrilling encounter at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. The third and final Twenty20 International match between the two teams showcased Bangladesh’s prowess and determination as they emerged victorious by four wickets.
In pursuit of a target of 103 runs, the Bangladeshi women in their iconic red and green attire demonstrated exceptional resilience and skill. Although they lost two quick wickets early on, with Shathi Rani scoring 10 runs and Dilara Akter just one, the team found stability through the partnership of Shamima Sultana and Nigar Sultana Joty. Together, they crafted a valuable 46-run alliance, steadying the innings and laying the foundation for a successful chase.
The middle overs saw the Tigresses lose a few wickets, creating a tense atmosphere in the stadium. However, the team maintained their composure and held their nerve, ultimately emerging victorious. Shamima Sultana stood out as the top-scorer, showcasing her batting prowess with a well-crafted 42 runs off 46 deliveries, which included three boundaries. Additionally, Sultana Khatun (12) and Nahida Akter (10) contributed impactful innings in the latter stages, steering Bangladesh towards a resounding win.
The outcome of the three-match series stood at 2-1 in favor of India. Bangladesh’s narrow loss in the second game, where they fell short by a mere 14 runs despite having five wickets in hand, will surely leave the hosts ruminating over missed opportunities. This victory marked Bangladesh’s third victory over India in T20I encounters, out of a total of 16 matches played between the two teams. Their previous successes against India came during the 2018 Asia Cup, where the Tigresses clinched the tournament title. In the round-robin phase of the tournament, Bangladesh emerged victorious against India before repeating the feat in the grand finale, cementing their position as a formidable force in women’s cricket.
In the previous match, India won the toss and elected to bat first. However, the Bangladesh bowlers demonstrated their prowess by restricting India to a modest total of 102 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Sultana, the off-spinner, provided Bangladesh with an early breakthrough by dismissing Smriti Mandhana for just one run in the first ball of the second over. She struck again in the fourth over, claiming the wicket of Shafali Verma, who had scored 11 runs at that point.
India’s Jemimah Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur joined forces to rebuild the innings, stitching together a 45-run partnership for the third wicket. However, the Bangladeshi bowlers exerted pressure during the middle overs, picking up wickets at regular intervals and preventing India from establishing a commanding total. In the latter stages of the innings, India struggled to score runs and lost seven wickets while adding less than 50 runs to their score. Harmanpreet Kaur emerged as the highest scorer for India with a valiant knock of 40 runs.
Among the Bangladeshi bowlers, Rabeya Khan shone with her exceptional performance, claiming three wickets and conceding just 16 runs. Sultana, the off-spinner who had made a mark with the bat earlier, also showcased her bowling skills by taking two crucial wickets. Their efforts with the ball played a vital role in restricting India to a modest total, setting the stage for Bangladesh’s thrilling run chase.
Shamima Sultana’s splendid innings and her crucial contributions to the team’s victory earned her the well-deserved accolade of the player of the match. On the other hand, Harmanpreet Kaur’s consistent performances throughout the series, amassing a total of 94 runs in three innings, earned her the player of the series award.
With the T20I series concluded, both teams will now turn their attention to the upcoming three-game One Day International (ODI) series.
